Mr Dreyfus will succeed Bill Van Faasen who has served in an unpaid interim role of president and CEO since March 16, 2010. The change becomes effective on September 7, 2010. The board has said that Van Faasen will remain involved with the company in a role still to be determined.

Paul Guzzi, chairman of BCBSMA board, said: “Andrew is not only an experienced leader in the industry and a nationally known expert on critical issues such as health reform and changing the way we pay for care, but as importantly, he has a broad understanding and passionate commitment to continuing and strengthening the important leadership role BCBSMA has played in our community since the company’s founding 73 years ago.”

Mr Dreyfus said: “BCBSMA is a great company with a strong legacy as a health and community leader. I want to thank the Board for giving me the privilege to lead such a highly regarded company during this critical time in health care.

“Making health care more affordable is, and will continue to be, our company’s highest priority. Slowing the unsustainable growth in health care costs will require a broad community solution and I pledge to work with others to achieve our shared goal of high quality, patient-centered health care at a cost that’s affordable to individuals, families and employers.”
