Profits up at John Lewis Partnership
The increase in profit was based on improved margins and efficiencies and tight cost control. John Lewis department stores increased sales by 6.1% to GBP1.24 billion, with like-for-like sales increasing 6.4%. Sales were boosted by good performances from the furniture, textiles and lighting departments. Online sales from John Lewis Direct increased 42%. However, a slowdown in sales growth of 2% at the department store chain in the first six weeks of the second half has fuelled fears about how a tougher trading environment will impact retail generally.
