Cider is currently considered a trendy drink in Ireland but it was not always perceived in this way. It used to have a rather cheap image with an older demographic. In more recent years, cider has been commonly sold in large PET bottles at discount prices, bolstering its cheap image in Ireland.
For a long time cider production was supported by preferential tax treatment. Bulmers is by far the market leader in Ireland. It is owned by C&C Group and produced in Clonmel, Co Tipperary. Outside the Republic of Ireland, C&C Group brand cider as Magners. Drinking cider over ice is popular in Ireland and this practice is often featured in Bulmers’ advertisements.
