Monsoon Accessorize appoints new CEO

John Browett returns to the UK retail market.

The British design-led retailer Monsoon Accessorize has appointed John Browett as its new CEO, effective 4 March 2013. Browett served as senior vice president of retail at Apple till October 2012.

Browett left Apple due to staffing allegations at some of the technology firm’s stores. He is the former head of Dixons Retail and previously a senior executive at Tesco.

In his new role, Browett will lead the company's Accessorize stores that sell products from handbags to hairbands.

Browett implemented a turnaround strategy at Dixons that saw off US electricals corporation Best Buy, while at Tesco, he was part of a team that developed core parts of the retailer’s strategy under Terry Leahy.

With experience of running a big international retailer and knowledge of internet shopping, Browett will help Monsoon Accessorize’s international and online expansion.

Peter Simon, who founded Monsoon Accessorize in 1972, said: “We conducted an extensive search for a new chief executive, and John has the skills and experience needed to take Monsoon Accessorize to the next level.”

Monsoon Accessorize, a privately owned chain with more than 1,000 stores in 74 countries, had been looking for a new CEO since May 2012.
