China meets cost rise for Mozambique national stadium
The Chinese government, which is financing the Maputo stadium, has pledged a further $2.5 million to remove soil from the site of the new stadium. It is expected to be completed in 2010, before the football World Cup to be held in South Africa. According to the memorandum of understanding between China and Mozambique, the extra money, which has become necessary due to the particular nature of the soil, will be disbursed in time to complete the work on schedule.This new financial agreement has raised the total cost of stadium construction to $60 million. The stadium is designed to have 42,000 seating capacity. The construction work is in progress. According to the technical team on the site, foundations will be completed before the end of this month, and out of the 850 planned pillars, only 100 remain to be installed.
