TRW Debuts Roof Airbag Technology

The new technology can help mitigate passenger injuries and improved interior design aesthetics and functionality, said TRW.

Over the past two years, TRW has formed collaboration with a European vehicle manufacturer to undertake pre-development work for the bag in roof technology.

TRW said that the airbag unit comprises a cushion and a gas generator which supplies the gas to the cushion in the event of an impact.

TRW's bag in roof design can significantly reduce the development costs of the dashboard as there is no need to develop a specific door that opens with the airbag deployment.

In April 2011, TRW Automotive has planned to launch a new vacuum sensor to measure and report the level of vacuum available in the brake booster.

TRW Automotive is engaged in manufacturing and supplying automotive systems. The product portfolio of the company includes steering gears and systems, air bags foundation brakes, chassis modules, seat belts, ABS and other brake control products.

Dirk Schultz, engineering director for inflatable restraint systems at TRW, said: “TRW's new roof airbag system is a unique development and studies have shown that such a technology provides enhanced styling flexibility for future vehicle interiors in combination with excellent restraint performance.”

Will the launch enhance TRW's product portfolio?
