"All-too-cosy relationships... at the heart of HMRC."

Business quote of the day.

It shouldn't be allowed. It is all-too-cosy relationships that is the problem at the heart of HMRC. It would be a strange government that would employ him considering the problems we've had trying to get our tax system in order, especially when he personally negotiated the deal with Vodafone.

Labour MP John Mann, member of the Treasury select committee, gives his view on the appointment of former HMRC boss Dave Hartnett, previously accused of engineering sweetheart deals with multinationals, to an advisory role at Deloitte.

Word of the week: Michellania

Each week The Staggers will pick a new word to describe our uncharted political and socioeconomic territory.

After brash Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump paraded his family at the national convention, the word of the week is:

Michellania (n)

A speech made of words and phrases gathered from different sources, such as Michelle Obama speeches and Rick Astley lyrics.

Usage:

"I listened hard, but all I heard was michellania."

"Can you really tell the difference between all this michellania?"

"This michellania - you couldn't make it up."
