The 84-year-old is the founder of the Swedish flat-pack furniture giant Ikea, whose worldwide success has amassed for him a personal fortune of £15bn.

Such is the company's popularity, it is estimated that one in ten Europeans was conceived on an Ikea bed.

Kamprad's shame at his far-right past (he attended meetings of the fascist New Swedish Movement in his youth) has moved him to establish a line of philanthropy through Ikea, including a recent donation of $48m to Unicef.
