The cars will be leased to public sector and business fleets as well as universities and research centres for demonstration and to collect data. The data will help Toyota in the development of a battery-charging unit.
Toyota will analyse feedback from the fleet trials with the aim to beginning sales in two years.
The details of the UK leases will be announced in the middle of next year.
