The company said that the decision to shut down the plant was mainly taken due to unfavorable economic environment and in order to keep Gatorade's overall manufacturing capacity in line with current market demands.

The plant is expected to be closed in around three months and the closure will impact nearly 100 employees of the unit.

Pat Burke, a company spokesperson, said: "Unfortunately, in the end, based on the economic conditions, we determined we could not keep the plant open. We are grateful to the Pryor community, the State of Oklahoma and our associates for their support. This is no reflection of the performance of our associates or the hard work of our community and state partners."

Mr Burke also said that all employees will be offered a three month time and one week of full pay, benefits and other assistance, along with outplacement services and counseling to both the employees and their families.

He added, "We are committed to maintaining the Pryor facility as an attractive manufacturing site, so a new employer can move in, and will manage the grounds and equipment for as long as it takes to find a potential employer or a new tenant to occupy the facility"
