Here are the first images of the Giant Squid. So who was right?

A Japanese-lead group of scientists have got the first live images of a giant squid on film - the crew apparently spent 400 hours in their submarine before they came across the creature.

Assuming it's a real giant squid, and not just a normal squid really close up, now's our chance to verify all those tales of the "kraken" - the mysterious tentacled monster that was supposedly inspired by sightings of the creature.

The real thing, in stills, looks oddly like a piece of rusty weaponry (see below). How does it measure up to its fictional counterparts?
