By Andrew Pugh Published 15 June 2011
BBC journalists are set to start a strike ballot this week amid reports that hundreds of journalism jobs at the corporation are under threat.
The NUJ has confirmed that ballot papers could be sent to members as early as Friday and that the outcome of the vote will be announced in around a month's time.
The union claimed 100 editorial jobs face the axe at BBC World Service and that there are further 30 posts under threat in the BBC's Television Current Affairs department and 43 journalism jobs at risk in BBC News.

Considering that license fees are still high, shouldn't the BBC also consider how the public perceives the content of their stories? We all know that the BBC has a pro-Israel bias (just ask Tony Benn,a former BBC producer/presenter).
Gambia: Breaking News: DR. JANNEH, AND CO ACCUSED OF RUNNING SECRET CELL IN GAMBIA—POLICE CHIEF!
DR. JANNEH, AND CO ACCUSED OF RUNNING SECRET CELL IN GAMBIA—POLICE CHIEF!
Security Chiefs on Wednesday said former Information Minister Dr. Amadou Scattered Janneh, and three others conspired to instigate hatred, contempt, and dissatisfaction against the President, and Government of The Gambia by running what they called a “secret cell” in the country with the objective of unseating the current Government. Police Chief Yankuba Sonko said they are currently pursuing members of the Group called “Coalition For Change” residing within, and outside the country—with the hope of bringing them to justice. He said Dr. Janneh, and co were operating a secret cell in The Gambia, and had been clandestinely distributing T Shirts displaying messages such as “ COALITION FOR CHANGE. END DISTATORSHIP IN THE GAMBIA NOW.” On the back of the white T Shirt the message reads “ FREEDOM,” the police chief said.
IGP Sonko commended his men for the brilliant intelligence gathering, which he said led to the arrest, and prosecution of Dr. Janneh, and his co accused persons. He said The Gambia Government will do everything humanely possible to go after the other collaborators whom Mr. Sonko said are currently at large. He would not explain how they intend to go about extraditing the CCG members, but the police chief told local journalists that efforts are being made to bring to book all those associated with this group.
According to IGP Sonko, Dr. Janneh, and three others wanted to instigate hatred against the Jammeh administration, and the administration of justice in this country. He said thanks to the timely intervention of the security forces the men were busted.
Police spokesman ASP Yerro Mballow gave an overview about the CCG, and Dr. Janneh’s alleged involvement in running the affairs of the group in The Gambia. Mr. Mballow said the former Information Minister, who is a naturalized Gambian American citizen has been on their watch list following intelligence reports they received linking Janneh to clandestine activities in the country.
Mballow, said that during a raid at Dr. Janneh’s office police confiscated a computer hard-drive containing subversive information. Two printer scanners as well as a transmitter device, was also recovered during the raid, he said. He added that Janneh also contracted one Michael C Thomas, a Nigerian residing at Lamin Sanchaba to print the said T Shirts containing the CCG information.
He said a vehicle with a registration number BJL 6268G was used to distribute the T Shirts in The Gambia. Momodou Keita and Ebrima Jallow were said to be part of those who distributed the T Shirts. The police spokesman also said the men were driving at high speed during the CCG T shirt distribution.
According to Mr. Mballow, Dr. Janneh, and his group were on the verge of setting up a radio station in neighboring Senegal Kaolack. He said the group’s objective was to use the radio for propaganda purposes, and also to launch attacks against the Government of The Gambia including the President Yahya Jammeh.
The police spokesman said one of the reasons why Dr. Janneh was dismissed from The Gambia Government was due to an alleged subversive activities. He accuses Mr. Janneh of supplying malicious information to “enemies” of The regime. He said Mr. Janneh’s intention is to instigate hatred, and dissatisfaction against the Government of The Gambia.
The men were handcuffed while GRTS reporters televised the police chiefs reaction to the apprehension of the accused persons. Janneh, and co are yet to take their plea. Lawyers representing them are also yet to interview them on the damaging accusations proffered against them by the state.
