Prescott to present shipping forecast

Twitter joke leads to guest slot in support of Red Nose Day.

Lord Prescott will read the BBC Radio 4 shipping forecast later this month in support of Comic Relief.

Prescott, who was a ship's steward before becoming a politician, was invited to present the forecast following a joke he made on Twitter.

In January, Prescott tweeted: "Now off to do [BBC Radio 4 programme] The World Tonight. At this rate I might stick around and do The Shipping Forecast."

It was spotted by Alice Arnold, one of the BBC presenters who reads the shipping forecast, who subsequently invited Prescott to present a guest slot.

Lord Prescott will read the "late ships" forecast at 12:48am on 19 March.

He said: "It is a real honour to be given the chance to read it."
