Absolute Radio adds ‘noughties’ to its station portfolio

Station to play "blend of the biggest-selling guitar bands"

Absolute Radio is to launch a new digital spin-off station, Absolute Radio 00s, for London audiences in addition to its existing portfolio of stations - Absolute Radio, Absolute 80s, Absolute Radio 90s, Absolute Radio extra and Absolute Classic Rock - it was revealed on Monday.

The new station, also called Absolute Radio noughties, will launch on 10 December with a with a morning show presented by Christian O'Connell.

O'Connell, who presents Absolute Radio breakfast show until 10am, will present an extra hour of the breakfast show on the new station for the rest of the month. Lucio Buffone will host the afternoon show, while Vicki Blight will be the DJ from 11am to 2pm.

The new station will play a "blend of the biggest-selling guitar bands such as Coldplay, the Killers, Muse and Kings of Leon alongside credible 00s crossover acts such as Outkast, Black Eyed Peas and Eminem.

It will also present historic interviews, music documentaries along with archive sessions of some old tracks.

The setting up of the new station is understood to be part of the company's attempts to strengthen its position on the digital radio front.

British Gas has agreed to be the new station's "exclusive commercial partner" until 2011.
