Ricky Gervais plans Chinese version of 'The Office'

Conversion of hit sitcom into Mandarin will be hardest task yet for the multi-translated comedy phen

Comedian, producer and actor Ricky Gervais plans to produce the Chinese version of British hit workplace comedy series "The Office".

Gervais announced the plan on his personal blog but did not divulge details about the cast.

The original comedy series, which starred Gervais as a hapless boss, was made in 2001 and showed the day-to-day realities of office workers.

The "mokumentary" has been remade in five countries - the US, France (Le Bureau), Germany (Stromberg), French-speaking Canada (La Job) and Chile (La Ofis). A Hebrew version is also in the pipeline for Israeli television.

However, Gervais is expected to face a huge challenge to recreate the dynamics of an English satellite town in Jiangsu or Guangdong provinces.

The original British version of The Office secured numerous awards including Best TV Comedy at the British Comedy Awards and Best Television Series: Musical or Comedy, at the Golden Globes.
