Kip Meek to chair Project Canvas

Former Ofcom man to spearhead new video-on-demand service.

Kip Meek, former chief policy partner at Ofcom, is likely to be appointed chairman of the BBC-backed video-on-demand venture, Project Canvas. Meek is currently a board member of the Broadband Stakeholder Group and Ingenious Consulting.

A source close to the recruitment indicated that all the partners in the venture - BBC, Channel 4, ITV, BT, Talk Talk and Arqiva - have agreed to Meek's appointment.

Meek's Ofcom experience is understood to help him deal effectively with the venture's critics such as BSkyB and Virgin Media.

He will play a vital role in selecting a chief executive for the project. Russell Reynolds, who has handled the chairman hunt, will also oversee the search process for a CEO. A brief on the executive position has already been circulated among industry figures in May.

Mobile operator Orange is also considering joining Project Canvas as its seventh partner, after Channel Five quit the venture.
