Channel 4 reported a profit of £300,000 backed by the strong performance of its digital TV and also due to its cost control measures.

According to the channel's annual report for 2009, its digital TV services - E4, Film4, More4, 4Music - and online/Future Media division made pre-tax profits of £53.4m and £3m respectively.

The broadcaster said that profits from the two divisions helped it to offset a loss of £61.6m on its main channel, which witnessed a 14 per cent year-on-year decline in advertising revenue from £668.7m in 2008 to £575.1m in 2009.

Channel 4 also cut costs on continuing operations by eight per cent year on year to £778.7m. Its redundancy programme in the last quarter of 2008 also contributed to £8.7m in savings.

While presenting the report, chairman Lord Burns ruled out high salary packages to senior executives, and said that he was not seeking a public subsidy for the broadcaster.
