Channel 4 to double art spending

Broadcaster will raise its art spending to £6m.

The new board chaired by the director of television and content, Kevin Lygo, will oversee the spending on art programming. Channel 4 has promoted More4's editor Tabitha Jackson as commissioning editor for arts. She will succeed Jan Younghusband, who left to join the BBC last year.

As part of the channel's initiative to increase arts programmes, More4 has entered into a partnership with the Arts Council and launched a More4 Arts strand. Film4 has also developed new films with prominent British artists including Jake and Dinos Chapman.

Channel 4's recent cancellation of youth-friendly flagship show "Big Brother" and the dropping of "Friends" from its schedule are apparently part of this decision.
