BBC Trust to impose sports rights test

The BBC Trust is reportedly considering options to impose a fair market and benchmarking test for it

Sources close to the Trust said it is keen on ensuring that the Corporation does not overpay for rights.

The BBC was recently criticised for mishandling the sports rights negotiations. In particular, it drew flak for not having effective market assessment for each deal.

The Trust's finance and compliance committee found that the BBC had breached its own competition and fair value guidelines while bidding for the rights.

The Trust will conduct a review of the sports rights in 2010-11.

Some industry insiders feel that the BBC may not be able to bid for sports rights if it has to wait for a test and benchmarking exercise.
