The Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Morsi has been declared president of Egypt, ending days of tense waiting for the results of the country’s presdiential run-off. Morsi won 51.73 per cent of the vote, beating former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq.
Farouq Sultan, the head of the panel of judges adjudicating the election, said that some of the 466 complaints made by the candidates had been upheld, but that the result still stood.
Celebrations have begun in Tahrir Square, where Morsi’s supporters have been maintaining a vigil in protest against the delays and efforts by the military to curtail the powers of the president.
