A 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Turkey on Wednesday 21.30 local time, killing at least seven people in the city of Van. Rescue workers have so far freed 24 survivors, but fear dozens more could be trapped inside the wreckage of 25 buildings that collapsed during the quake.
Just eighteen days ago a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in the same area destroyed over 2,000 buldings and killed more than 600 people.
Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay said only three of the 25 collapsed buildings had been occupied because of evacuations following the devasting quake on 23 October.
