Côte d’Ivoire: in pictures

Laurent Gbagbo is finally forced from power, four months after losing the election.

Above, a fighter loyal to Alassane Ouattara, the internationally recognised winner of November's presidential election, kisses the floor of the Hotel du Golf in Abidjan moments after being informed of Laurent Ggagbo's arrest.

Smoke billows from Gbago's besieged residential compound moments before his arrest. Backed by French tanks, forces loyal to Ouattara stormed Gbagbo's underground bunker.

Families flee the Cocody quarter of Abidjan for Abobo after France pounded the Gbagbos' residence in fresh air strikes. The bombardment came hours after joint UN/French raids to destroy heavy arms used by the embattled leader's loyalists.

I keep wondering when African Leaders will learn to stop the practice of being sit tight rulers. If we want colonial interference to stop in Africa, the practice of sit tight governance, looting of the treasury and nepotism should stop. I am more surprised at Gbagbo, who as a Professor, allowed himself to be ridiculed by an illiterate soldier by slapping him around. This is good riddance to bad rubbish.

fish, you don't need a prayer mat to pray certian prayers. perhaps this soldier is praying salaatul shukr, which means the prayer of thanks. it is two prostrations and can be done anywhere, prayer mat or not. just to clear that up

Just want to point out a "mistake"....the first photo shown above is not somebody kissing the floor....rather, it is somebody praying to Allah....you see, most of Ouattara's supporters are Muslims.

Prayer mat is not a requisite. You will often observe some Muslims praying without prayer mats. However, no footwear should be worn whilst praying, and it is clear to see in the picture that the soldier has not removed his footwear. Therefore, he is kissing the ground and not praying! Idiot or not.

@Will. So you have taken an image of a solidier who is clearly kissing the ground and put your anti Muslim twist on it.

Do you see a prayer mat there in that pic? No? I didn't think so.
Idiot.

Gbagbo ay have been arrested, captured by whoever by whtsoever legitimacy but it will all boil back to one thing, we are motgaging our continent to the pre 19th Century sharks that wrecked our through colonilism. If Kawame Nkrumah and Lumumba were only allowed another minute of life, they would be shy to associate with any of us living in post indpendence Africa. The second colonisation process is surely taking root and designedly aided by the victims! isn't Gbagbo's arrest a play back of what happened in Congo 40 years ago? It Belgians then and this time it is the French arresting and don't be surprised someone apologising to aiding the killing of Ivory Coast's leader 10 years to come. Cry oh cry dear dominated motherland Africa, who will come to your rescue in this eat or get eaten world of giants wrecking havoc all the place! f t i not Iraq it is Afghanistan and if not Congo it's Ivory Coast and in whose interest are these crises? uhuululu, it will either be Uncle Bush, Uncle Blair and before you celebrate their departure Cameroun, Obama and Allan Jupe are just mirrored images of the former.

@Fish. Sorry...you are right. Thanks for pointing it out.
