When William Hague said last week that he would remain in his job for “an extended period of time”, it did little to quash rumours that he was struggling in his role as Foreign Secretary.
But in an interview with the Sunday Telegraph, “Hague the Vague” has robustly dismissed the idea that his job could be at risk after a series of mistakes over Libya.
There’s a certain irony. People tell me there’s a newspaper article saying I lack energy, presumably written by some lounge lizard who’s rolled up at 11am and wondered what to write about (without being rude about journalists!) when I’m already on my second country that day. We’ve put a huge amount of new energy into British foreign policy.
Pressed further, he said:
If some of the people who write about mojo came with me for a week, they would drop dead on their feet. Is that a clear enough answer?
And if that wasn’t enough, he added:
The Prime Minister is extremely supportive [of me] and so are the vast majority of Conservative MPs. People had better get used to the idea.
