Students of the BBC’s World Cup coverage are well aware of the Garth Crooks post-match interview. The former Spurs and Stoke City striker has been one of the corporation’s pitch-side commentators for many years, and is famed for his long and winding questions that have left the likes of Sven-Göran Eriksson dazed and confused.
The Spanish Garth Crooks, as it were, is a journalist called Sara Carbonero. Carbonero also happens to be the partner of the Spanish team’s keeper and captain, Iker Casillas, the man who lifted the World Cup trophy last night.
In a previous episode of a relationship lived through the media’s lens, Carbonero was blamed for the goal Casillas conceded during Spain’s opening-game defeat to Switzerland (apparently her nearby presence was a distraction). She followed this up by asking a concise (Crooks, please note), if undiplomatic, question of Casillas: “How did you manage to muck it up?”
Anyway, it appears that all is well again between the pair, judging by last night’s post-match interview . . .
UPDATE: In other World Cup news the Netherlands beat Spain, according to CBS.
