Mandelson begins to spin his way out of defeat

The Business Secretary suggests making Cameron PM would be a kind of victory for New Labour.

Regardless of the outcome of this election, Peter Mandelson is already trying to spin his way out of defeat. Here's what the silver-tongued First Secretary recently told the NS editor, Jason Cowley:

The point about the Conservatives is that they believe they cannot win an election by running against New Labour. They are for the political landscape that we have created.

The whole point of Cameron's Conservatives is to market his party in a way that leads people to believe they've put their past behind them, that they're a continuum of New Labour.

They are not, as it happens. But the fact that they feel they can only win power by marketing themselves in that way says a lot about the strength of New Labour.

You'll be able to read more from Mandelson in Jason's interview with Gordon Brown for this week's magazine (out tomorrow).

As he writes, it does seem like an attempt by Mandelson "to claim a kind of victory even in defeat". He speaks with the pride of a teacher whose textbook (The Blair Revolution Revisited) has been eagerly devoured, even if not all of the lessons have been learned.

Yet key figures on Labour's centre left, such as Jon Cruddas, argue that the similarities between Cameron's Conservatives and New Labour represent a defeat, not a victory for the party. It is because Labour has been insufficiently bold that the Tories have succeeded in masquerading as progressive, even while pledging to cut taxes for millionaires.

We can expect this division, between those who feel flattered and those who feel enraged by Cameron's rise, to be at the centre of any future Labour leadership contest.

PM always reminds me of the cobra in 'Jungle Book', with those hypnotising eyes. PM was the master of spin. GB is right not to slag off his colleagues in his book.

What a load of tosh from Mandelson... no surprises there though; he shares the blame for New Labours demise with Brown and many others. Now for the real truth...
NEW LABOUR are paying the price for completely neglecting the working class people in the UK, who are struggling to make ends meet with high taxes; both direct and indirect. It will pay the price this thursday.

New Labour have sucked up to the 'Islington trendy academic socialists' who wouldn't know a working class person if they fell over them. (If they did meet one they would probably feel superior and smug). They certainly wouldn't know the reality of the struggle these poor families have had to endure for so many years: Ordinary people whom now cannot even afford to fill their car with petrol or pay their extortionate gas and electric bills. Meanwhile the New Labour cronies continued to feed their fat stomachs in the trough of self-indulgence and arrogance and allowed so many others to do the same... listening to the 'middle class academic champagne socialists' and militant minorities; who had a disproportionate influence on policy making, for the last thirteen years. Meanwhile treating the silent majority of decent ordinary British citizens with contempt; often ignoring the many voices of concern; from so many respected and traditionally wise sources.

The bottom line is that New Labour completely lost touch with its roots and allowed the rich to get very rich and the poor to get even poorer; so it deserves what it gets on thursday; they have no one to blame but themselves.

Yeah, yeah, but the point is the poor will be even worse off if the Tories get into power.

Vote Labour as Mandelson has brought back Campbell.

Mandelson spends his time helping oil companies get contracts in iraq.

Blair has made a fortune with kuwaiti and korean oil firms with ties to iraq oil fields.

But just remember vote Labour.

There's real, though perhaps tragic irony at work here. Mandy's comments are so similar to Thatcher's who slyly smirked that her greatest success was the creation of New Labour. How right she was. Now he's saying virtually the same thing. Cameron is the successor to Tony Blair, though of course he tarts it up a bit, as only a...

Whoever wins the election, the poor will be worse off, because there are going to be massive cuts in government spending, along Greek lines. And, anyway, who gives a damn about the poor, really? Do they even bother to vote, or have any real power?

What's frightening is how little has changed for the poor, consdering how much effort Brown has put into reducing the most blatant aspects of poverty in Britain and an economic boom. This is because, despite it all, there are other, more powerful economic trends that virtually wipe out all the progress, so one ends up running on the spot in a desparate attempt not to be pushed backwards even faster.

According to Peter Mandelson, David Cameron is impersonating New Labour. Apparently with success. It doesn't say much for the creator of New Labour that he cannot expose Cameron as a fake.

Graeme's picture

writeon, crap as Labour is, it will worse for the poor if Tories get in. That is the point.

Forget Mandelson; perhaps the most succinct analysis is to be found here:

I'm really not so sure about the argument that the poor are really that much better off under a New Labour government than under the Tories. How much better off, and is it worth swallowing so much crap from Labour just to help the poor?

Anyway, are the poor at the centre of the election capaign? I don't really notice the triplets arguing fiercely about how they intend to raise the poor up at the expense of the rich this time around.

In truth, the poor don't matter anymore in UK politics. They are merely a kind of political totem one mentions on occassion in order to garner sympathy and show that one has a heart and is not completely without morality. Yet the poorest in our society have been effectively sent to a kind of internarl exile, where they are tolerated and expected to keep quite and not disturb the rest of merry, middle, England, by turning into a mob.

The reason we have so many poor people in Britain is because they serve a useful socio-economic purpose. They there to impose discipline. They are like a living, breathing, warning and detterent; look what could happen to you if you don't keep in line; and yet, paradoxically they are almost invisible most of the time.

If... if one was really serious about irradicating poverty, which is incredibly wasteful and unproductive, yet, as outlined above, serves a very useful purpose, as the last thirty years of Thatcherite policies prove beyond doubt; then one could do it over a twenty-five year period. But, but, but, one can't do it without a genuine transfer of wealth downwards towards the poor, so they would have the economic and social resources that would enable them, over time, to adopt middle-class values.

One cannot, as New Labour seems to think, have a middle-class culture, without a middle-class income and resources, or something along those lines.
