Fox News UK? It could still happen

Get ready for a dizzying series of cross-platform bundles from Rupert Murdoch.

It's not a surprise that Rupert Murdoch won. We all knew he would win; the only issue to wonder about was the scale of the victory.

Vince Cable (remember him?) may have bravely said that he was "declaring war" on Murdoch, but in such a war, there was only ever going to be one winner. Rupert always wins.

I think we're meant to conclude, based on some of the correspondence that has been released, that it was a tough battle between News Corp, Jeremy Hunt and Ofcom, rather than a cosy fireside chat, but I don't think the end result is a whole world away from the best that News Corp could have hoped for in the first place.

A lot has been made about the decision to hive off Sky News into a 39.1 per cent News Corp-owned independent company, but the really interesting bits about this deal, if it goes ahead (Robert Peston provides a few caveats) lie outside the future of that particular channel.

In all this fuss about the integrity and health of Sky News – and goodness only knows how we'd survive in the modern multimedia age without the insight of Kay Burley or the HD Skyvulture hovering around any newsworthy site – there's something else that hasn't been talked about as much. What's going to happen with the rest of the huge empire that's now been given the green light? What about the new XXXL BskyB/News Corp group?

You have to wonder what kind of tie-ups there will be between the Sky channels and the paywall-protected News Corp newspapers. Might we be able to get a subscription to the Times or the Sun bundled in with broadband or your TV channels, for example? Might we get a peep behind the paywall as part of our TV subscription?

What if the News Corp newspaper websites provided video news content that might compete with the new "independent" Sky News? And who would regulate that? Richard Desmond is leading the way with a dizzying series of cross-platform plugs for his various Northern & Shell products; it would be naïve, I think, to imagine that the new News Corp wouldn't do the same, or better.

As well as that, many of us are wondering what regulations or restrictions there would be in place, if any, to prevent BSkyB from establishing a loss-leading news channel to sit alongside the independent Sky News, one that could be completely controlled by News Corp – a Fox News UK, if you can imagine such a thing. (I'm sorry if you can imagine such a thing; it must be ghastly for you.)

This, then, is just the beginning. Where it goes from now is anyone's guess, but Sky News is only a small part of the picture.

But what do we get out of the deal?

@Trevor - "so let's have some genuine competition on TV".

again, there is nothing stopping these people setting up their own TV station, they are not being stopped by Mr Murdoch.

@Trevor - personally i (and it seems broadcasters too) dont think it would be wise for the views of 'anarchist and revolutionary socialists' to be promoted on Sky News or bbc etc.

however, nobody is stopping them from launching their own tv stations etc.

they have a big presence on the internet with their various blogs, radio shows, video streams etc.

thus plenty of choice.
saying it will "never be allowed" is absurd.

I don't know why people think there will be a UK Fox News. Regardless of what you think about Murdoch there is nothing like Glenn Beck or Sean Hannity in Sky or his papers. Quite possibly because Britain has a different culture to America and most people - even on the right - think the likes of Glenn Beck are absurd.

Unless Roger Ailes becomes becomes the new Chief Executive of of Sky News, don't expect much more than the usual right wing fodder in this country. Which is no less inaccurate than John Pilger, George Monbiot and Laurie Penny.

"Murdoch Always Wins".

Not this time.

@Perry Mason

I dare say billionaire plutocrats like Murdoch and his ilk think it unwise to give publicity to views which, if they ever came to fruition, would consign both him and his class to the dustbin of history, but we're supposed to live in something called a "pluralist" democracy where all viewpoints are given fair exposure. Yes, radical left-wing beliefs are to be found on the internet, but the vast bulk of the world's population still obtain most (if not all) their information from the mainsteam media and this is what shapes their outlook and values. We are told, ad nauseam, that capitalism promotes "choice" through competition, so let's have some genuine competition on TV, radio and in the press when politics is under discussion by giving equal coverage to radical socialist ideas. After all, if capitalism is such a superior economic system what have its advocates to fear?

He is singlehandedly responsible for much of the dubbing down of this country because he lives by the adage that no one ever got poor by underestimating the intelligence of the general population. His rags show tits on page three and stoop to phone hacking, titillation and celebrity gossip to grasp pennies from the hard of intellect. His TV interests create monopolies on sport that used to be on terrestrial TV and produce crap in the way of drama and documentaries. http://www.carinsurancehq.net/

You people across the pond are morons. If you get a channel and do not like it do not watch. Fox News channel is the most watched news channel in the U.S.. Wait until you all have to buy prayer rugs then you will only have Al Jazeera to watch. You are for choice in killing but not in watching a real news channel.

@Marcus and Perry Mason

What choice? When we have broadcasters willing to give airtime to anarchist and revolutionary socialist ideas instead of wall-to-wall neoliberal propaganda, then you can talk about choice.

But this will never be allowed under capitalism's "free market".

some people have plainly been bought around here. It is plain as day.

Murdoch, suck this,

I for one would warmly welcome the choice of being able to watch a UK specific version of Fox News.

It is all about choice.

While I detest the idea of Fox 'News' UK, I doubt it would work. Every time a Fox News style media outlet is launched outside of the US, it doesn't do well financially. Canada's National Post, for example is very right wing and has never turned a profit in its history.

I’m sure the owners of Sky News will not be swayed for one moment by the fact the channel’s losses are being underwritten by the minority shareholder who broadcasts their programmes. What are you talking about. Brave Jeremy. There's a good Jeremy.

"I for one would warmly welcome the choice of being able to watch a UK specific version of Fox News."

No rational person would possibly welcome such a thing, given how utterly divorced its 'news' would undoubtedly be from reality.

Unless it was for the lolz.

@ Marcus

It's called Sky News?

If rupert came to touch me or any of my family I am afraid I would have to hack at him wiht my arms or if I had a garden tool, I know its upsetting but the thought of his hands on my son and or my daughter would slash at him with a rake to get him off, serious couldyou (Stephen Baxter) have murdoch hands on your family?? I could not live with myself. Sir vince cabel shold be a sad day and for one I could comfort him, have experience of doing so!!

Marcus there would be no problem with a UK Fox News, if they just dropped the 'news' bit from the title.

Colin T's picture

Does anybody else have the same dystopian vision of the future where Rupert Murdoch's head in a jar controls the world?

MR's picture

Marcus, with all due respect my friend to welcome anything akin to Fox News is like blatantly welcoming unadulterated idiocy and extremism. Really, would anyone want to watch a network where the shows are hosted by the UK's version of Glenn Beck? Does anyone really want to sit through an hour and entertain the psychotic, paranoid ramblings of mad men who are nothing more than pissed off that they're losing their grip on the psyche of westerners?

Welcoming this brand of "news" is something I'd expect out of your typical American. But out of Britons? Really?

Tom's picture

Not to be rude. But it's amazing that the millions who say they oppose this don't fight this en masse.

If you say, I don't have time to march, there are other ways to protest. They're perfectly legal and many can be done in the privacy of your own home.

How do you fight the MSM? Beat them at their own game and think outside the box.

ang's picture

@Colin T.
You have been watching futurama, but I think your vision of the future, could one day become reality.

perry mason's picture

@Marcus - i agree.

why are so many against choice?

you can choose to subscribe or not.
you can choose to watch or not.

why do people have a problem with choice?

Chris's picture

@perry mason

It's not about being against choice, it's about being against bias/lies dressed up as "fair & balanced" reporting.

News is clearly different to other 'products' in that people rely on it to make political choices.

What a disaster. Murdoch is another who knows the price of everything but the value of nothing. A natural Tory bedfellow. He is singlehandedly responsible for much of the dumbing down of this country because he lives by the adage that no one ever got poor by underestimating the intelligence of the general population. His rags show tits on page three and stoop to phone hacking, tittilation and celebrity gossip to grasp pennies from the hard of intillect. His TV interests create monopolies on sport that used to be on terrestial TV and produce crap in the way of drama and documentaries. Seriously, does anyone watch Sky TV for anything produced by Fox other than The Simpsons?
He is everything that is bad about the media.
