Golden Dawn fascists are not just Greece's problem

Europe will turn to angry nationalisms unless an alternative to austerity is found.

It was an unwelcome echo of Europe’s past: as black-clad henchmen barked instructions at journalists, ejecting those who refused to show “respect” by standing up, Nikolaos Michaloliakos, the greying leader of Greece’s neo-Nazi Golden Dawn, hailed his party’s unprecedented entry into parliament. Waving his fists like a practiced demagogue, he threatened retribution “for those who betray this homeland”. Then came a promise: “The Europe of the nations returns. Greece is only the beginning.”

The sudden emergence of Golden Dawn – an obscure fringe party only a year ago but which won 21 seats in Sunday's general election – is the latest symptom of political turmoil to hit Greece as it struggles to cope with EU-imposed austerity. Mainstream parties have fallen like dominoes as Greek voters, angry at being punished by a fiscal compact that protects northern Europe’s wealthier economies, look for politicians that have not been tarnished by compromise with the Brussels elite. Many have turned left, but 7 per cent of voters chose Golden Dawn, which promises to “clean” Greece of immigrants and boasts a swastika-like emblem on its flag. In the words of one Greek Jewish leader, “They don’t deny the Holocaust – they desire it.”

The spectacle has made outside observers shudder, while the millions of Greeks who did not vote for Golden Dawn are justifiably revolted. Greece has not suddenly turned to fascism – and although Michaloliakos was a supporter of the military junta that ruled the country from 1967 to 1974, there is no special darkness within the Greek psyche that lends itself to extremist politics. Golden Dawn’s gains, which can be reversed, were achieved with techniques employed by the far right in other countries. It stood “ordinary” candidates – members of the public who had been drawn to the party in recent months – for election, and it won some support  by imposing vigilante patrols in urban neighbourhoods. As in other countries, they have been challenged every step of the way by Greek anti-racists.

Golden Dawn's scapegoating of immigrants is widely shared, too. Across Europe, the financial crisis has inflamed tensions between a global market, a multinational EU, and nation states that still count on patriotism as a social glue. Migrants have thus become a lightning rod for all manner of anxieties. The difference is that Greece feels these more acutely, battered by five continuous years of recession and sitting on the EU’s porous border with Turkey. Frequently, migrants are sent back to Greece from other EU countries to rot in poorly maintained detention centres or left destitute in a country where one in five is unemployed. The fate of 200 African migrants left to drown in the Mediterranean last year by Nato forces – possibly including a British helicopter – suggests we are all capable of such callousness. This is not Greece’s dirty secret: it is all of ours.

The success of Golden Dawn is a tragedy for migrants and a painful dead end for their voters who will find them a quack cure for their country’s ills. There’s a grain of truth in Golden Dawn’s call for Greece to be freed from “the slavery of the bailout agreement” and voters will continue to seize on it until a viable alternative is found.

Left-wing parties are now struggling to find enough common ground to form a government and fresh elections may have to be held next month. The challenge is to find a solution that brings stability while fulfilling the egalitarian principles the EU project aspires to. Otherwise, the future is one of angry, reactionary nationalisms – and, perhaps, if groups like Golden Dawn are allowed to keep a foothold in democratic politics, something even more vicious.

although it is true that nationalism and racism has been on the rise lately in Greece, we have to admit, embarrassing as it is, that many Greeks voted for golden dawn as a joke! Instead of not voting at all, instead of voting a 'real' party, they voted for something that sounded as ridiculous as golden dawn - since no one ever believed they would ever get elected - 'sticking their tongue out' to the mainstream political system. There are nationalist or fascist parties in other places of the world that present some kind of a political agenda, whether you agree with it or not is a different issue. However, in our case we are talking about a group of incoherent thugs and hooligans that don't even know how to talk properly, and be assured, in the next elections they will return to obscurity were they belong. http://www.squidoo.com/best-circular-saw-reviews

If the EU was let's say GOLDMAN SUCHS then the Greek govt would be the new graduate employess taking the subway from Queens / Brooklyn for $22000p.a and be a total slave to the corporate stucture and it's elite....MY POINT: Greek govt is not relavant...the occupy movement of Europe is - hopefully SYRIZA is a part of this and the Greek electorate prove themselves to be the most advanced in the world ( or like some parts of South America ) in the up comming elections in June. To all the so called educated Geeks living in London / Berlin / New York it's time to go back to your grand dad'd village and just listen....for they have the answers not your corrupt towns.

In an attempt to help explaining a bit the sudden rise of golden dawn and the 21 seats they got in the Greek Parliament, let me add the following: although it is true that nationalism and racism has been on the rise lately in Greece, we have to admit, embarrassing as it is, that many Greeks voted for golden dawn as a joke!

Personally, as a Greek, I am more concerned with the fact that we consider elections as a joke and have reduced our right to vote to an act of revenge and ridicule of our political system. The only hopeful thing is that, exactly because of the 21 'leventes' (lads) of golden dawn entering the Parliament, in the next elections people will respect their vote a lot more.

My friend you are foolish if you believe that people voted for Golden Dawn as a joke. People are sick of the lies that pasok and new democracy have been feeding them for the last 2 decades. the 2 ruling parties have sold out Greece for a euro and as long as they stay in power they will drive Greece to the grave.
once that happens Enter Golden Dawn!
Overnight they have become a force. nearly half a million people voted for them knowing what they stand for and who they are. And there isnt a party which loves Greece more than the Golden Dawn. Immigrants will exit the way they came. If they do not like it TOO bad. They did not ask us if we wanted them in the first place. and did we? NO!!!!!! so we will ask them once to pack and leave then they will go the other way. there is no room for them. there are no jobs for them and no homes for them. who will pay for all that? The Greek people? Enough is enough. Golden Dawn is here! the Leader will guide us through this crisis. Golden Dawn is now and tomorrow and there is nothing stoppinmg them now. Greece will be liberated

Western countries have an obligation in looking after the elementary needs of their impoverished migrants. If they do not do this, they're evil.

Since you seem to be Greek as well, my grandmother used to say:
'tha pidiso tata mou,
the se do paidaki mou'
Let us return to this conversation after the next elections.

I would be more concerned about zionist supremacists in Israel given nuclear submarines by the brainwashed germans. The Samson option would destroy europe.

The greeks are simply angry that the European Union is trying to replace their people with a assortment of arabs and africans

The REPORT on countering racism and xenophobia in the European Union document is quite telling, the EU actually confesses that Europe is not to be white no more

"Rejecting aspects of contemporary nationalism based on obsolete and destructive ideas of homogeneity which foster division and racial hostility ; and believing that Europe must divest itself of the idea of a white core culture"

The irony is that only racial hostility I have seen in my whole lives come from arabic immigrants, before that, when my town was 100 % white, we didnt even care about racism, no one of us was racist

In wanted to destroy Europe they are actually increasing racism

Oh come on! That is like saying I'm not a paedofile as long as children aren't around. Keep the children away and I'm lovely. No.. You're still a phaedophile.
The world is populated by many different people's- all the bloody same really, but some like to look at the pathetically similar differences and make an issue about it. I grew up in a very 'white' city in the 70's- could I help being there, no, I just was. To be told I faced all that racism and that it was my fault for being there is a bit much really. -oh, and none of this was from anyone other than white British people. Which I have to say is quite disheartening, especially being that my mother is white British (although i bet lots of her and my ancestors came from elsewhere- like everyone's, people move because they have to, it's life. Get a grip on reality man- people move. Move with the times.

It's not the same at all. Greece is the gateway to posterity for East Africans, Southern Asians and the Middle Easterns, not to mention impoverished East Europeans. If you were a teenager or in your early twenties, living in the slums of an Indian city sprawl, and you heard of others "making their fortunes" in Europe, you'd want to do the same. That is the consequence when part of the world has resources that the rest lack.

The unevenness of wealth is the cause, not the fact of people migrating. We've managed to absorb immigrants into this country who were sorely needed after the second world war, and since. We can't just "spit them out" because we FEAR some sort of backlash. The sensible thing to do is close the door to further immigration, especially now when jobs are scarce.

Rumour-mongering should be ignored. Most immigrants lead a quiet life, not looking for trouble, just want to support their families, same as most everyone in the world.

"Greece is the gateway to posterity ..." Indeed it is and maybe in twenty or so years "East Africans, Southern Asians and the Middle Easterns, not to mention impoverished East Europeans' will be able to say it's the gateway to prosperity as well; but not now. Not with 50% unemployment in young Greeks.

On a slightly more serious note: if the middle class are beggared into penury by financial fraud and cronyism; they will reject what they see as corrupt democratic politics for far more radical populist "solutions". A that is needed is the right sounding demagogue. Recent European history is replete with examples.
