Iain Dale defends Chris Huhne against pious right

Idea that climate change secretary is not rated is a myth.

Interesting division of opinion over Chris Huhne today. On parts of the right, there is some predictable pious moralising. But here is Iain Dale:

James [Forsyth] says that the Lib Dem members of the cabinet were not properly vetted. This implies that he thinks someone having an affair should never have been appointed in the first place. Rubbish. The rest of the piece is one attack after another on Huhne. He's called "a busted flush", "a man with a high opinion of himself" and James thinks his "star is on the wane".

I think he exaggerates. Huhne is far from a busted flush and if anything happened to Nick Clegg he would still be a good bet to succeed him.

Dale is right about that. One of the allegations made in the hastily formed analysis of Huhne's position is that -- unlike the Tories' state-slashing darling David Laws -- he is not rated inside the Lib-Con coalition. In fact, Huhne, an economist and successful former financial journalist, is acknowledged as highly intelligent by anyone who knows him.

He came very close to being elected Lib Dem leader, and some of his outriders point out that he might have won, had certain late votes been counted in the contest to succeed Ming Campbell.

I suspect that the fake fury aimed at Huhne is based on the suspicion that he is to the "left" of Nick Clegg. If Huhne was being judged on his abilities to do the job alone, there would be no question -- even in the right-wing press -- of his resigning, which won't happen.

Rightly or wrongly, the fact that Huhne's lover is reported to have been in a gay relationship for the past few years is bound to affect public perceptions. People may not acknowledge it, but most are more ready to accept the notion of an MP leaving his wife for a secretary or some 'babe' but won't accept so easily that he might leave his wife and kids for a Lesbian in Doc Martens, as the Daily Mail is portraying her.

Wrongly. LGTB. It shouldn't be an issue. Only the disgraceful. Red and Blue Tops will make it one.
The point is Huhne is a cad a bounder, and a scoundral for concealing the affair, just like Laws.
He is also incompetant as a Minister in his Dept, just like Cable Alexander and Clegg. But they may learn and get better.

To be quite honest, I couldn't give a toss about politicians' sex lives. Unless they do something illegal, hypocritical, or corrupt, it is none of my business.
Laws defrauded the taxpayer, and had he been claiming benefits, would have done time.
WhoHe has hurt his wife and family, but humanity is frail, so unless it turns out that this has led to a major wrongdoing, let it be.
The uglier side of the Tory right are just a bunch of weird hypocrites, who peddle salacious rumour and revel in their own titilation. A bit pervy if you ask me...

Actually Iain Dale is defending Chris Huhne against the pious and hypocritical left, who are smirking all through their sunday roasts, while remembering fondly the antics of "desktop Prescott"

Curious how the Guardian describes Huhne and Cable as Cold-blooded Capitalist and the Telegraph describes them as reactionary redristributionists.

Robin Cook, the only Cabinet Member to resign, and darling of the Anti War Faction, had a clandestine affair during the GE.
Huhne has effectivey been sidelined to Environment, and his influence is on the wane. Cable is a bore atr the Dispatch Box.
