World Cup special: England v Germany open thread

Leave your comments, vent your frustrations or celebrate in print here.

One or two people disagreed with my last intervention into the world of football, in which I called for a British national side.

So I thought I'd keep it agreeable today and, instead of making any predictions, merely offer up the space below as an open thread for your comments on England's performance against Germany. Enjoy the game.

Back in the 40s, Orwell said something to the effect that international sport fosters emnity rather than unity.

Lets just remember that all sport is now part of a worldwide entertainment business, nothing more.

Have to say I wast bothered, although I prefer Rugby anyway.

Clem squeeks ''

'' I realise that England has always gained strength over time from the country being swamped by immigration.''

You mean like muslim terrorism, black street knife crime, sharia law, honour killings, I could go on but Im tired.

Night night.

On the contrary Abdul, I have a meliflously deep voice.

Plus England had Irish brickie Wayne Rooney Shrek playing. In Ireland he is considered good looking, the Brad Pitt of Ireland, you gotta laugh, havent you ?

clem the gem's picture

"real englishmen"? Iwould prefer surreal Englishmen, or Magic Realist Englishmen, anyone but real englishmen...
"The trueborn Englishmans' a contradiction!
In fact, a fiction!"

Clem me old son

Are you one of those chilled out, liberal, live and let live, hippy, one worlders, who think that if you're just off the boat from Timbuctu, and you're in the country for 5 seconds, you can play for England ?

alan's picture

Pathetic but in fairness they have been like this all tournament england have a lot to learn still about modern football

The better team won. :p

Isn't it now time we looked at these ridiculous far fetched and totally out of touch salaries? How can the likes of Rooney be worth, reportedly, £170,000 PER WEEK in this day and age. None of them are worth the money! It's a disgrace and it certainly doesn't breed good players!

jeremiah's picture

@Nick. Rooney & co. get paid £100,000 per week for their clubs. When playing for England they only get significant sums if they reach the latter stages of a competition.

England were poor but they won't get much money for going out in the 2nd round.

England are a disgrace to wonder capello, who can make them play with a strategy instead of doing helter skelter! Their defence is non-existent. May be less pay and more education will help, America gets the best via college scholarship, and if you watched them vs Ghana, you would see tactic in their game, not luck. Boo England. Hail Capello, go coach coachable teams, not this one. I rest my case.

An absolute disgrace. The Ref and Linesmen need specs. England woz robbed f that 2nd goal. The sooner they bring in hawkeye technology the better. England deserved that 2nd goal, then the whole psychology of the game might of changed. On the other hand, it might not. England started badly; the Germans played much better; our defence was hopeless; we expected too much of Rooney, he should have been taken off; all players should be equal on that pitch. Fabio should go now. An absolute disgrace. The next Manager should be home grown not foreign, Beckham maybe. And he should do it for love not money.

Jeremiah. On today's performance, I'm sure that there's many getting a shade over £64 per week in the dole queues of this County who would be happy to play for far less than the disgusting sums these players get; and they'd probably do a far better job to boot! It's indefensible to say this lot are worth any where near what they get, they are not!

jeremiah's picture

@Nick. Get over it! Rooney will probably play like a Trojan for Man U come August. If he gets Man U to the Champions League Final he will be worth it, believe me!

England is a very average team with some trumpeters around them. They say Germany does not have *star* players. But has anyone seen, for instance, how disciplined and consistently Klose plays and scores (even in the last World Cup)? If Klose was from England, they would have knighted him already.. and then he would start playing like Rooney.

Banned Horse's picture

Good thing you didn't make any predictions, James -- because your scorecard when it comes to predicting opinion polls and Labour majorities makes England look like a team of Peles!

ROBERT TAGGART's picture

Where to start ? !
1. Do not blame Fabio. He can only work with the 'monkeys' (Lions ?... not !) he has to choose from.
2.Introduce goal line technology... at 2-2 it could have been another ball game !
3. Ditch the Three Lions symbol ?... Lions ? What Lions ! Not since Mexico '70 has any Eng. team had so much as three lions in their ranks.
Predictions
1. Harking back to '66 (and depending on the opponents WW2) will continue... yawn, yawn, yawn !
2. At Euro '96 one predicted English failure for a generation if we failed to win that with home advantage. We are half way through that generation !
3. The hero's of '66 will be dead... before Eng. win their next major trophy !
England... same old, same old, same old... !

The Sun lost - hooray.
I wonder if the immigration cap will be applied to the next England football manager. Certainly my suggestion for addressing the budget deficit would be that all highly paid prima donas in politics and sport should get the average working wage. A taste of reality might help with focus.

Nick's picture

Well I never thought I'd end up agreeing with someone called winniethepooh; but never a truer word said!

And Jeremiah, I'm over it!... and Rooney will never be worth the wage he gets, never! We pay all of these so called 'talented celebrities' way too much!

Poo Monkey's picture

{Nick} "Well I never thought I'd end up agreeing with someone called winniethepooh}

Winnie the Pooh is the master of Taoism n let's never forget it! Let's forget today's gashfest tregedy that was the England game instead.

Young players = Too much money = Twats

Fair play to David James though... and Gerrard (before he started hoofing it in desperation)

mount1's picture

Jeremiah, we lost because the money that saturates the game via Murdoch TV rights and fleecing gullible fans (like yourself) has meant that the English players in the club sides (few) when they get together are too partisan / distracted / unenthused / spoilt / arrogant to be able to pull together. Breaking up the TV rights monopoly and allowing free to air matches would help bring football back to the people and heart back to football, but meantime keep supporting your corporate masters like a good slave. And ye he will probably play 'like a Trojan' for Money United. Fine old world.

jeremiah's picture

@Mount. Whoa, calm down! England lost because as a team because they were not good enough. The Premiership is a different matter. The league is the greatest in the world because of the TV money.

Like it or not ITV don't have the dosh and the BBC won't pay. I'm afraid it's sky's way or the highway. Making Premiership games part of the crown jewels would ruin the game, and drive away the foreign talent that makes the league so great.

thinkov's picture

they were either shit or mutinous or both
nine of em should never play for us again

I reckon Terry organised this shambles

because he hasn't got over being stripped of the captaincy

clem the gem's picture

No Abdul, I am one of tghose relaxed, well read Englishmen who is proud of his own mixed heritage - Scots, Cornish, french Hugenot, Jew... all in there somewhere.
So I realise that England has always gained strength over time from immigration.

flora's picture

The Ref should've gone to Specsavers!
