Well I thought she was superb. She managed to communicate to the wider audience what true conservatism is about. She thinks its ok for Lord Ashcroft to not pay £27 million in taxes and lie to the nation. She clearly thinks that lynch law is appropriate. She was angry, aggressive intolerant and incapable of rational debate. She was the icing on the cake of a week where the Tories' fitness to govern has been beautifully undermined. Keep up the good work.
Agreed. Couldn't quite believe she was so utterly vile. I used to think she was great as well. Shame.
Hands off tv's leggy maths brainbox!
Fair play to Carol, it takes a special talent to out-bluster Boris Johnson but she managed it.
Shame she had to keep staring at her notes rather than the audience. Try writing talking points on your hand, it's what the pro's do.
Is Carol Vorderman the Tories new attack dog?
Ironic that she is advising the Conservatives on maths education when they have said that no-one with a degree class lower than 2:2 should be teaching.
Mark, you've said it all. Thanks Carol.
Mugabe also announces his support for Cameron, saying: "We have always related better with the British through the Conservatives than Labour. Conservatives are bold, Blair and Brown run away when they see me, but not these fools, they know how to relate to others."
A new Tory poster is now about to hit the billboards: http://www.moneymad.org/david_cameron_poster_mugabe.jpg
I went to bed in a foul mood after CV's hideous incoherent ranting. And Johnson was horrible too. That affable buffoon schtick doesn't wash anymore. He deviously tries to undermine the flow of anything that isn't going his way. I can just imagine what kind of spoilt little brat he was as a kid. (WIll Self was terrific; articulate, not playing to the audience, and resisting punching screeching smug CV)
It was a terrible, shaming edition. Dimbleby was flirting with his fellow Bullingdon Club chump, the blustering Johnson. Vorderman was awful: inarticulate, shrill, popularist. Shirley was muted. Adonis looked nauseous. Self was okay. Nice column he writes in your mag.
Beautifully put, James. She spoke absolute nonsense throughout the programme, especially with regards to the Bulger case. She needs to be reminded that a little knowledge is dangerous - she made herself look incompetent and flustered. Will Self went even further up in my estimation.
Well don't know if everyone was watching same as me ..I thought Carol was brilliant she SAID what we are all thinking ..the Labour MP tried to shout her down or talk over her and she was having none of it ...Will Self I normally like ,,but he was full of self importance ..Carol got across about Browns lack of funding for the forces in Iraq and the Jamie Bulger case ..in laymand terms ...not like the rantings of Self ...who was totally self opionionated ...perhaps they WOULD want to know what this Henous man had done had it been one of THEIR families children murdered...and after all these "things" that committed the crime have cost tax payers hundreds and hundreds of thousands of pounds and to what ends ?? He STILL ends up behind bars ...lets hope he rots there ...WITH his new bloody name ...
What are you talking about? Adonis barely raised his voice to interrupt another panellist. The only one who shrilled over the sound of another person talking was her. Cameron will probably dump her after this, that was not a good impression.
It's self-evident why it's reasonable to ask whether the public & the victim's parents have a right to know of Venables' crime.
The point was simply articulated a little bit later in the program by a lady in the audience.
To Will Self - a quick reminder :
"Facts established at trial show that, at this location, one of the boys threw blue modelling paint on Bulger's face. They kicked him and hit him with bricks, stones and a 22-pound (10.0 kg) iron bar. They then placed batteries in his mouth. Bulger suffered skull fractures as a result of the iron bar striking his head. However, Alan Williams, the case's pathologist, speculated that Bulger suffered so many injuries that none could be isolated as the fatal blow.
Before they left him, the boys laid Bulger across the railway tracks and weighted his head down with rubble, in hopes that a train would hit him and make his death appear an accident. After Bulger's killers left the scene, his body was cut in half by a train. Bulger's severed body was discovered two days later, on 14 February. A forensic pathologist testified that he had died before he was struck by the train."
(from Wikipedia's article on the James Bulger murder, references removed)
I've got a lot of time for Adonis... He seems to actually do his job for one thing.
Agree with most comments on here... CV was painful to watch... They should get Rachel Riley on next time, I'd be very interested to hear what she has to say.
Well said James. Vorderman was incredibly irritating on QT. She reminded me of Nigel Farage.
You used to have a crush on her and now you compare her with Sarah Palin. Bet if Carol Vorderman was a man, she wouldn't be getting half this grief.
Jenny I'm sorry to say we were all watching the same shambles as each other. Carol Vorderman ought to heed the old maxim, "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt". She's good at sums but TERRIBLE at this sort of thing.
Anyway, I'm off to sign up for a ridiculous loan which will financially cripple me for the rest of my life, and start on a new fad detox regime. Cheers, Carol!
God, Will Self please marry me.......rational and intelligent as always. Shirley Williams was fine too. As for Carol Vorderman, her performance confirmed everything I had always suspected about her; ignorant, narrow minded - ultimately so, very, very stupid.
Vorderman has surely made a complete fool of herself with that performance.
DoctorDimmage love your comments.
Jenny glad to see you are in the minority. Please, please let it stay that way.
Dear Carol,
Please tick one of the following 3 possible explanations for your performance on Question Time....
(a) I was acting the role of a right-wing, intolerant, inarticulate bitch on Question Time.
(b) I was acting the role of a nice, stable, fair-minded woman on Countdown.
(c) I have a multiple personalities disorder.
Carol Voldemort...
She also looked down most of the time and appeared to be reading from notes in the manner of a dull school teacher
"Well don't know if everyone was watching same as me ..I thought Carol was brilliant she SAID what we are all thinking "
Jenny - stay quiet love.
There's a good lass.
who appointed you as the nation's spokesperson?
She wasn't saying anything I was thinking -
nor a lot of people here, it would seem.
I'm very relieved to say.
Or do we not exist in your world?
In response to a.m.r.'s unnecessarily graphic reminder of the crime.
For what purpose would you revel in repeating this much detail, when we are all in agreement that the crime itself was appalling?
I noticed that too Watcher. It's interesting to note that under the Tory policy of teachers needing at least a second class degree that she wouldn't actually be able to be a school teacher, no matter how dull.

She may not have been every lefty's wet dream but you couldn't fail to be impressed by her depth of knowledge on most of the subjects they tackled. I believe the panelists don't get advance notice of the questions; she must have a lot in her head.
Funny how CV reminded Dave (above) of Nigel Farage in last week's QT. Could it be because they both spoke their mind, unlike most of the hand-wringing guests Dimbleby brings on?
Completely agreed. She treated the audience like a group of toddlers who she had to talk down to. She's clearly addicted to being on television, but seriously Carol, rest on your laurels and retire gracefully.
Will Self should be on every single week.
What's happened to QT? Last night's viewing was pure car crash. Voderman was an odius bore who's dillusional to think that she's funny & engaging. Can't see her appearing again on QT or hopefully TV any time soon. In the face of having 2 Tory reps, why did Labour offer up Adonis? Obviously bright but hardly charismatic!! Boris showed himself up - think people are starting to realise the joke has worn off - he's just self indulgent & rude. The show didn't even mention M Foot's passing - He would be spinning. Would have loved Crow or Galloway to have been on the panel. Whatever next?
As a child Jon Venables committed an awful murder, he was then tucked away in a secure home and educated in what society regarded as right from wrong. He was then, as a young adult released back in to the wider society with the memory of what he had done and a new understanding of right and wrong, we, society chose to give him a second chance of life with the understanding, that with the new trust we had afforded him came responsibilities, namely to abide by the terms of his licence and to be a good member of society.
His recall to prison has shown that despite all he has been given over the last 17 years he has chosen to betray our trust. No one can now say he is a confused child of 10 with little understanding of what he has done. In this case rehabilitation has not worked, confinement may be the only answer.
I love that these celebrities start to believe their own hype. It was CV's bullish arrogance that annoyed me most, but always good to see a persons true colours. She will think she did pretty well no doubt.
Will Self was excellent. Seriously thinking of being "non partisan" myself from now on after that.
Excellent analysis. She even put Boris in the shade for stupidity - not an easy task. The worst edition ever of an increasingly irritating programme.
The weaker her arguement, the louder she spoke. I was fed up with just seeing the top of her head. She hardly lifted her head up so that we could see her eyes which was so annoying.
Will Self Rocks..and Shirley
Williams too.
The trouble with geeky mathematicians like Carol is that they have no sense - stick to numbers and fractions etc. Carol and leave politics to us arts and humanities grads. Alright?
The progamme was salvaged by Shirley Williams, Lord Adonis and Will Self. DD's chairing was weak, and does not augur well for his chairing of the leaders's debate. CV needs a new CV -muppet for hire. Boris needs his pension, soon.
I feel guilty I used to have impure thoughts about her - she will never enter my head again
Mark - carol v was awful and has driven me to canvass as much as I can for Labour.... I would disagree you with you vis a vis saying that she was the icing on the cake in a bad week for the Tories. I think the icing on the cake was Mugabe saying how much the wants the Tories to win the election!!!!
Exactly Mark et al... CV was a perfect example of what the average Tory is like....and I've never heard so little from Boris... the pair of them made Adonis and Shirley Williams look quite leftwing and Will Self look like a guru!
One really clever thing that Carol Vorderman has done is convince a lot of people that she's some kind of mathematical genius. She got a not particularly good degree in engineering, not maths, and I don't think ever used it in a job. I imagine pretty well every maths teacher in the country knows more about maths than Carol does.
Thank god for this article. I thought I was dreaming last night. She was so OTT. She wouldn't look up at anyone, kept shrinking into the desk and was so silly. I thought she was on drugs or having a breakdown. Sad
~~~~~It was left to our own excellent Will Self to argue bravely that the child killers may not have been evil. (I don't necessarily agree with that, but boy, was it a courageous view to articulate in that Middle England arena.)~~~~~
"but, boy....", "articulate...."
Write English damn yer eyes!
What's evil about killling little boys? Our brave troops do it all the time. They don't get any rehabilitation though, just money and medals.
Paul:
You think it is great that CV and Farrage can speak their mind. Is that all you appreciate in a speaker? doesn't it matter to you that they should have something WORTHWHILE to say as well?
I think CV should be employed by "The SUN" after that performance.She knew as much as the next woman in the pub and was peddling the same populist crap you can read in that paper every day of the week.
A pathetic QT, which ,I am afraid ,reflects the level of political debate in this country.
Will Self was the only one with an independent brain and still I wish he would have emphasized that those murderers they were talking about were CHILDREN when they committed the crime and therefore not only NOT responsible, but surely abused themselves, to have committed such an evil act.In most countries, you would not have known who they were and they would have been treated as mental patients and not sent to prison like adults.How we treat children in this country is shameful.
Meanwhile I am told, as a teacher, that children are not responsible for not doing their homework because it is MY FAULT for not making it interesting or easy enough!
Nobody seems to realize the stupidity of those contradictions which must surely confuse children as to their responsibility for their actions.
Having spoken to two Countdown producers I was surprised to see how glad they and other crew were to see Carol go, after last night's Question time, I can understand perfectly.
Incidentally isn't it time the ever interrupting Dimbelby retired and a new presenter appointed, I suggest the Wonderful will Self
Is Ms Vorderman the latest evil Tory plot to seriously back fire?
Car crash TV at it's best/worst!
I used to think that this woman was pure Viagra, but after being left feeling like a rubber-necker, all that I craved for was a stiff drink!
The Conservatives need Condoms, not Non doms!
The Daily Mail put up a story a few hours ago about how terrible she was, but it's suddenly disappeared!!
It still comes up in Google at the time of writing this though!
I have just endured the first 15 mins of the recording of QT. Ms Vorderman was truly embarrassing - her rant against Peter Mandelson even made me feel quite sorry for the poor chap (and that's saying something)!
As a floating voter who is drifting away from the Tories by the minute, I have to say that if the Tories have any sense they will keep Ms Numbers hidden away between now and polling day.
Cobie, I reposted a description of the crime in response to Will Self's "are they really evil?" question.
He said he'd read the transcripts, and that he didn't think it was clear that they (the two murderers) were as bad as they've been made out to be.
The question of 'evil' is vague and often subjectively defined in practice. Unless Will Self was challenging the facts established by the court case, I found his 'are they evil?' question to be disturbingly sophistic.
MSV,
Being numerate and scientifically literate are generally considered to be advantages.
I see lots of mostly chauvinistic insults thrown at Vorderman here, and not much engagement of the question.
Just as Nick Griffin's QT appearance showed him for what he is, Vorderman's performance dispelled any illusions that she might have either intelligence or political judgement and simultaneously called Cameron's own judgement in question yet again. Not a bad night's work!
Boris's reputation must have taken a plunge too, after that appearance. Avoiding difficult questions through the old public school buffoon act just won't cut it any longer.
