Two questions for Cameron . . .

. . . on Tory MP's "Jews under the Nazis" expenses comparison

My colleague George Eaton has already highlighted the obscene comparison made by the Tory MP David Wilshire. Just to remind you, he said:

"The witch hunt against MPs in general will undermine democracy. It will weaken parliament -- handing yet more power to governments. Branding a whole group of people as undesirables led to Hitler's gas chambers."

Cameron has given his response:

"It's a frankly ludicrous thing to say and I think he should withdraw it. MPs have got to understand that the public do not have confidence in our expenses system. The expenses system needs to change, MPs need to understand that. People don't want to hear MPs sounding off like that."

As others including Paul Waugh have pointed out, this is notably incomplete. Two questions for Cameron:

1. Does he accept that this is a trivialisation of the Holocaust?

2. Will he withdraw the whip if Wilshire refuses to retract?

Oh for God's sake! An MP says something absurd and idiotic, and his party leader describes it as ludicrous and tells him to withdraw it. Leave it at that. Its not "notably incomplete" at all. He doesn't have to say explicitly whether its a trivialisation of the holocaust any more than pointing out every single other thing that is wrong with Wilshire's comments. And he doesn't have to say what sanctions, if any, he will employ if Wilshire doesn't retract. Paul Waugh's point merely identifies it as an interesting political intrigue.
