The regressive Pope, by the Boston Globe

Story behind Rome's assault on Canterbury

To anyone interested in the state of modern Christianity, the Roman Catholic Church, Anglicanism or, indeed, life itself, let me heartily recommend a read of this exceptional piece by James Carroll in the Boston Globe.

The "hook" for the article is the Vatican's disgraceful mugging of Rowan Williams and his fragile Anglican Communion, but the essay delves much deeper than that. By describing the regression in Rome since the 1960s and the days of Vatican II, of which this move is a product, the piece acts as a definitive appeal for modern Christianity. I will leave it at that, as I am unable to put the Church's plight into such eloquent -- and important -- words.

Never mind schism in the Anglican church - I can imagine that if the Pope attracts significant numbers of Anglicans to this new "Ordinariate", there might be murmurs from the Catholics...

After all, Catholic priests are required to be celibate, but Anglican converts aren't (and indeed, many will probably have families)...so whilst the Anglicans will avoid a two tier church, the Catholics will end up with one!

That you could lavish praise on such a tired piece of post modern liberal trash says more about your powers of reasoning that it does about the state of the Catholic Church. It will be thriving long after you and your tedious diatribes are forgotten dust.

James - with respect, you're making yourself look rather foolish here. The papal proposal has come in response to repeated petitioning from Anglican clergy (including bishops, such as the Bishop of Ebbsfleet) who have visited Rome and requested the provision of such a structure. I appreciate that British journalism has a long and lucrative history of imputing the worst intentions to Catholics - Titus Oates would not feel out of place on a Murdoch newsdesk - but I think the New Statesman should probably aim a little higher. "Disgraceful mugging" is a ludicrous characterisation.
