Police: unaccountable thugs or admirable heroes?

Join the debate

The Police Federation's in-house journal has very generously just published a guest article by me, arguing that the failure of successive governments to hold the force to account over its culture of cover-up, racism, thuggery and incompetence has let down both the British public and the police itself.

The piece is by way of an introduction to three fringe meetings, sponsored by the federation and which I will chair, at the party conferences in coming weeks. The subject for debate will be: "Should the public trust the police?"

I hope that if you can't make it along, you'll leave your verdict below.

As long as the Police allow themselves to used as political tools then they must expect a degree of distrust among the people. Look at the actions of Police at the recent G20 and also look at the film Taking Liberties to see how the Police allow themselves to be used as a political tool.
