Cable would be a reasonably good MP if he resigned his present post.
Damned if he does and damned if he doesn't really.
Should he have said 'No' or 'I've no idea'? Obviously not.
Saying 'I probably would' is the most modest, sensible answer he can give, even if you're intent on ignoring one of only three words in the sentence.
To be honest, I don't know if Cable would be a good Chancellor but it wouldn't be hard for him to do a better job than Osborne.
