Mehdi Hasan’s polemical take on politics, economics and foreign affairs

Question Time, Israel and 9/11

An astonishing claim -- even by his standards -- from Richard Perle.

Last night's Question Time special on the aftermath of 9/11 featured the "Prince of Darkness", Richard Perle, ex-chairman of George W Bush's defence policy board and US neocon-in-chief.

Most of his remarks had me groaning but one, in particular, caught my attention. Israel, Perle claimed, wasn't in violation of international law. He said:

Find me the Security Council resolution that Israel has ... read more

Me versus Douglas Murray, on last week’s Question Time

The YouTube video is up.

Some of you who live abroad and have no access to the geo-locked iPlayer have been messaging me to ask when last week's Question Time will be up and available to view on YouTube. Well, here it is: part 1 below. And here are parts 2, 3, read more

Some post-Question Time clarifications

For those of you who seem intent on getting the wrong end of the stick . . .

I'm not sure which I enjoyed more – appearing on BBC1's Question Time last night or following the Twittersphere's reaction to it as the show went out at 10.35pm. BBC "liberals" love the BNP

What was that about left-wing bias again?

I don't want to say I told you so but . . . er . . . I told you so.

The BBC's decision to invite the BNP leader, Nick Griffin, on to Question Time next month is, in my humble view, the final nail in the coffin of the ludicrous right-wing argument that the corporation has a liberal or left-wing slant. How many bona fide liberals ... read more

Peter Hitchens, the BBC and me

The right is in denial about the Beeb

Peter Hitchens has -- finally! -- responded to my challenge to rebut or even refute my piece on BBC bias in this week's magazine.

Hitchens (dare I drop the "Mr", or will that be construed as the ultimate manifestation of anti-conservative, bleedin' liberal behaviour by the Mail on Sunday's star columnist?) begins his denunciation of me in an "unusual" manner:

Today's posting is slightly unusual in that it is ... read more

Is the BBC biased?

Peter Hitchens thinks I'm wrong to dismiss claims of left-wing bias

I have a piece in this week's magazine arguing that the BBC, far from having a left-wing or liberal bias, is, if anything, more of a right-wing and conservative institution. The BBC, I write, has "an Establishment bias, a bias towards power and privilege, tradition and orthodoxy. The accusation that the BBC is left-wing and liberal is a calculated and cynical move by the right to cow the ... read more
