Muslim Valentine’s Day video for the EDL

How love and tolerance can triumph over hate and division.

I came across this great video on YouTube and thought I'd share it with you:

Love and tolerance...except if your Gay,Jewish, youre not an apostate and you dont draw cartoons.

Maybe Medhi you can play this to the 3000 British muslims who travelled to Pakistan to train in terrorist camps. How many terrorist attacks have the EDL committed? A couple of chaotic drunken demos hardly compares to downing a few aircraft with liquid explosives.

Im sure the Danish cartoonist who has twice been nearly murdered for daring to exercise his democratic right to freedom of expression would love to be able to walk out of his house knowing that Islam is really religion of peace and tolerance and he wont get attacked. Lets not forget salman Rushdie, Theo Van Gogh and Arishi Ali.

EDL are now the scapegoat not the islamists who caused their formation in the first place. The left have done it again, blame everybody else but Miltant Islam.

John's picture

Its easy to be be "unconventional, unapologetic and different" when you are an arse. :)

Coventry's picture

what a joke your are Mr Hasan. FACT

Jamie's picture

I just think we should stop attacking EDL, but help them and educate them and listen to their fears instead of dismissing them like some child. Instead of labelling them and pushing them into a corner that will only make them more radical and aggressive. Remember this is a group of people in our society who feel isolated with no one to represent them. They are born out of frustration and misunderstandings. It was retaliation to IslamUK burning poppies and being abusive to our soldiers. They felt that the UK government did nothing to those demonstrators and another incident was brushed under the carpet. But the minute other faith groups start to demonstrate its a different matter. We need to look at the cause of these groups and remember it takes two to tango. EDL and IslamUK are misguided in their actions, and they need support and education and a strong hand. I know a lot of my facts are probably wrong, but EDL did not just form because some people were bored on a Sunday night.

Apster Hack's picture

Mehdi, I love your style man! Totally unconventional, unapologetic and different. Nice one :)

Jamie's picture

I thought journalists had to be unbiased and give a report, with maybe a comment clearly labelled as their own opinion with evidence at the end. Ah I guess standards have dropped or maybe reporting has died.

sven king's picture

OMG - Hasan has finally lost the plot...we were waiting for his apology and spin on the dispatches program last night and how it was all taken out of context (as was his own Kuffar speech) and that he got a beating at the same age and that it didn't do him any harm type stuff...

and sitting in bed last night he probably thought to himself...even I cant blag my way out of this one...

So he finds some spurious clip (by a Muslim outcast) on you tube and thinks I know what, lets bash those EDL characters and lets hope noone mentions dispatches...ROFL

Care to comment on these Muslims and what they about Valentines day?

Great video. The quotes were really eye opening.

What a co-incidence, I too came across a video on YouTube the other night.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhPeyxJ7vGU&NR=1

I hear there is a recent vacancy for an Islamic Teacher at a certain school in Birmingham. I feel you would be perfect for the job of moulding those young minds into integrated citizens of the UK.

@John

Well yeah, there are plenty of those around - but they're usually pretty conventional, not to mention predictable. Quite a few of 'em on these blogs pages too :)

Did Medhi Hasan really post this?

Has the debate degenerated to the level of arguing as to who is less contemptible; the EDL or the world's billion + Muslims.

Come to that what is the debate in the first place.

Mehdi is almost certainly more capable than this.

Like many on the economically entrenched (ie those who have a career dependent on their status as a polemic) wings, I think a sense of humour would be useful.

After all, chromosomely deficient skinheads arguing Nietzsche inspired epistemology is quite amusing.

Andy's picture

Oh Alex I'm not a member of the EDL and you do not seem to have answered the question. It speaks volumes that you start to attack rather than use what little intellect you have to reply. But what else do we expect when you learn you debating techniques from Medhi.
Not so much the blind leading the blind, but an arse leading an arse.

Cameron's picture

To any who call the EDL violent, you have no idea what true violence is and you haven't seen anything yet?

Alex's picture

Oh Andy, it's not the muslims fault that you are a sad directionless loser, living on a council estate with no future prospects. Nor is it the Muslims fault that the only way you and your edl chums can feel tough is when they are picking on a minority. You are an example of broken Britain, you never met your father did you? I imagine you were the result of a one night stand and this has made you bitter and twisted.

Andy's picture

You really are fighting the demons in your own mind and you have revealed far more about yourself than you wished to.

You have my sympathy and I hope you grow from the poisonous self hating state you find yourself in, to be what you can be which I'm sure we can all see is better than you are now.

Good luck.

Oliver McCarthy's picture

I assumed Mehdi was talking about Channel 4's latest episode of 'Not ALL Muslims Are Evil, Just Most of Them'. The EDL have (quite predictably!) put it straight on their website.

Stuart Eels's picture

Mehdi Hasan becomes more ridiculous by the day, he has long since given up being a political commentator which he is employed to be.

He now seems to be soley focussed on defending one particular religion before anything else.

Come on NS, you've got plenty of people than this raver!

Alex's picture

I see the usual thicko Islamaphobic bigots are out in force today.

Mind you when you dont have a job and are a total loser, then you are bound to have plenty of time on your hands...or your wrists in most of your cases.

Shkara's picture

@ moronamid - WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU ON ABOUT???

Dan's picture

I find it bemusing how many ppl hate Mehdi.
Why?
Because he speaks freely and promotes Islam (majority) instead of denouncing Extremism (minority).

Shkara's picture

@sven king

I find jokers like yourself quite immature and seriously wonder how old you must be. Are you implying that these articles you've pulled out represent the whole of Islam? You think the goings on in a community in Malaysia represents the 1.3 BILLION Muslims out there? Seriously, get a life.

To me, people who will make the effort to only look for negative news that might degrade a people or religion have a serious ehical and moral problem. And it's paradoxic how, in their claim to appeal for fairness and justice, they deliberately look for any negatives as well as any way to demean a religion and civilisation.

That kind of hypocricy is only too evident. To all islamophobes: do us all, and especially yourselves, a favour and look for some integrity and dignity.

Shkara's picture

I will extend my advice not just to the islamophobes but all haters of religion.

MatthewBlott's picture

@ sven king

A good summary, it left me speechless after I'd watched it.

@ Dan

You are right that people dislike Mehdi Hasan because he promotes Islam. But it is not his job - he is the political editor of the New Statesman not an imam. Where are his posts on feminist issues and the plight of sexual minorities? Nearly everything he writes about has an Islamic bent - and he wonders why people think he's a closet Islamist.

EdWelthorpe's picture

"All religious beliefs are pathetic, backwards, false, dangerous, and only beneficial to the elite."

Communism has been there and tried it, friend. Even Joe Stalin stopped dismantling churches. It'll be a long time before planet Earth's proles lose their taste for voodoo.

Ataturk wanted to wean his people off Islam but they feared upsetting elderly relatives or needed the sentiment of tradition too much. Also 'spiritual' does tend to make up for 'educated'.

Eventually he made it compulsory for prostitutes to wear the burqa. Which sent it out of fashion just a touch. A classic double-bluff 'nudge' which history thanks him for!

sven king's picture

@ Shkara - as usual, claiming your victim status... not addressing the real concerns and blaming others for reporting on them.

@Mathhew Blot - your spot on, we dont trust Medhi as he has spouted the same Hateful rhetoric as the people in dispatches and says its all out of context, I just cannot trust him.

Andy's picture

Oh Alex please do educate us about Islam, I'm just a Kuffir and an example of 'cattle' which cannot hope to understand this sophisticated set of beliefs.

Des Demona's picture

@ Stuart Eels
I tend to agree with you. As a longer than I care to remember reader of the NS I do find it hard to take that the 'political editor' spends most of his time defending and prosletyzing for his chosen religion rather than relentlesly attacking this shoddy and inhumane government.
Polemic is one thing but when all it does is deflect what we should be arguing about to a minority archaic set of bigoted religious beliefs then you have to wonder what has happened to the left.

Sue's picture

@ Matthew and Sven
There are enough people in the media hating on Islam.
So he isn't an apologist, so he doesn't jump on the Islam is evil band wagon, so he talks about religion, so what? Everyone is talking about Islam these days. Mehdi is giving us his take, as a practising Muslim. I'd much rather read his take than tosh from the daily mail or telegraph written by someone who doesn't have the first clue about what Islam is about.
He is objective in the news he writes, but he gives us his OPINIONS in his BLOG... duh

PS video was a bit corny Mehdi but the kiss at the end made up for it.

Randomly pulling quotes from the Koran doesn't really prove anything.

Muslims believe that the Koran is the absolute word of God as told to the illiterate Mohamed which was then told to his followers and remembered by his followers and then written down at some later stage many years after the event. Later verses that contradict earlier ones are to be accepted in preference. So Allah the infallible must have made mistakes the first time round. Funnily enough the later verses always seemed to coincide with what Mohamed wanted to happen.

Now is anyone seeing some gaps in this philosophy that any half decent lawyer let alone a QC could drive a horse and cart through.

If that does not inspire some questions in your mind let me play my trump card. There is no God or Allah or whatever you choose to call your chosen invisible supreme being. So quoting his so called divinely inspired words is really just nonsense. And what does that make the people who accept them as divine.
This applies to all deity based religions by the way not just Islam.

Oh and by making these observations I have just given myself an automatic death sentence which if some religious nut could find me they would carry out. Hence my use of a public net access and pseudonym. Why should that be necessary for not agreeing with what someone else thinks.

Conners's picture

Alex wrote

"The bit about being fatherless hurt didn't it? So what if you are a bastard you can still be a good member of society"

then, in the same sentence "if only you stopped the hate and discrimination."

Followed by "Why don't you find a more constructive way to challenge your aggression"

dovetailed with

"I know that jobs are a little scarce right now but there is always Mcdonalds"

The EDL are a reaction against what they consider to be a dangerous ideology, that is Islamism. Yes some of the EDL supporters may be thugs, but were you saying the student riots about tuition fees were wrong because they smashed a building, threw a fire extinguisher from a seven story building and tried to throw Molotov cocktails at the police? No. We do not judge someone's argument by the violence or otherwise of their protests. Instead try and engage with their arguments.

They believe that the fact that apostacy is illegal in many Islamic countries, that homosexually is illegal, that women are treated terribly shows that Islam is not compatible with western values. Now that may not be true but that is the argument which you should try and counter with counter-arguments rather than cherry-picking verses from the Koran (other people can do the same to show Islam as extremely violent and intolerant). The argument that Islam is incompatible with liberty has some strong points: the multiple attempts on the life of Salmon Rusdie; the murder of Theo van Goch; the non-publishing of the Danish cartoons of Muhammed in British newspapers for fear of reprisals; the permanent bodyguards now defending Geert Wilders; the fleeing to the USA of Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Now these might all be just crazy individuals but it does cause extreme harm to the concept of freedom of speech. Counter those points rather than pointing to the easy target of attacking the EDL or the BNP. If liberty and Islam are compatible then I have no problem whatsoever with Islam. If they are not then I choose liberty over Islam everytime.

I found this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APAPqT3QdFU

Would you like to comment Medhi, or do we just accept you as a bigot?

Evidently your 'understanding' of Islam has not effected a 'liberal' attitude in you.

Andy's picture

'Lol @ the Islamophobes posting their racist bile on here :)'

I don't know what's more stupid, the statement above or the fact the author does not understand why it's so stupid.

Alex's picture

Andy - when is your next edl rally?
By the way what is a Kuffir? C'mon you amoeba at least try to spell! But then again the edl members are never going to be accused of being scholars!

Alex's picture

Andy so I was right wasn't I? The bit about being fatherless hurt didn't it? So what if you are a bastard you can still be a good member of society- if only you stopped the hate and discrimination. Why don't you find a more constructive way to challenge your aggression, I know that jobs are a little scarce right now but there is always Mcdonalds?

dillon's picture

what about a valentines video for the racist, fascist, bigoted, nazi, islamic vermin who was exposed last night on channel 4 dispatches documentary in lessons in hate and violence,,see how medhi hassan has avoided making any comment about that,,why is that you ask??because he agrees with the the fascist swines of hate, and as usual the left wing vermin cloglites are silent on the same matter,,i am 100% in support of the edl..so screw you medhi babe lol you muslim extremist bigot..

Abbas's picture

Thanks Lou, people like you give me hope.

Anyone realise that the people running the schools in Dispatches are the Deoband sect of Islam? a sub-sub sect and even then most Deoband followers consider that variant of the Deoband sect to be extreme. This was fairly well pointed out in Dispatches so I really don't get why people are generalising their actions to Islam and Muslims.

I was born in the UK and have grown up here, I've been to a Muslim Saturday school and the way we were taught could not have been more different then what I saw on Dispatches. Please throw any hate you have away, we've seen throughout history violence only serves to create more violence, and dialogue always leads to peace.

Jake's picture

Hasan, how dare you?
You are a disgrace. You are a hypocrtical anti non-Muslim whose cover up is trying to come across as a progressive leftie. Do you think we are all stupid?
Your views are a disgrace, and your attempt at a justification for them is even worse.
People aren't fooled young man.

EdWelthorpe's picture

"When roses are red they are ready for plucking,

Raheel's picture

The point Mehdi is making here and has been doing so many times is simply that the blanket condemnation of Islam and all Muslims as extreme and violent by edl and some of the people here is unfair, selective and plain wrong. He has also on a number of times condemned Islamic extremism and urged Muslims to engage constructively in the socio political sphere in this country. For that he gets accused of being an Islamist and a lot worse!

Alex's picture

Conners obviously you do not understand the word irony.

These edl members are thick as shite

Lev Bronstein's picture

So, Mehdiy,

did you watch that Channel 4 prog about "lessons in hate and violence" ?

It's good to see what is happening in British schools and mosques. Islam is, after all, the religion of peace !!!!!!!!!!!

What a load of garbage. Islam IS what Muslims do. No wonder people are voting for unIslamic parties across Europe.

Radio 4 broadcast a programme about un-Islamic political parties. I think I will find it on the iPlayer. Should be a good laugh.

The people have woken up. We don't need to be bullied by people who call us "Islamophobes".

Rise like lions after slumber
In unvanquishable number
Shake your chains to earth like dew
Which in sleep had fallen on you
Ye are many ! They are few !

Left Is Forward's picture

All religious beliefs are pathetic, backwards, false, dangerous, and only beneficial to the elite.

It's not anti-Islam, or Islamophobic, to say that. It's just admitting the simple truth - as any rational, thinking human being has had access to since the Enlightenment.

But for Mehdi to be pushing a religion's "Valentineness" on us, when hundreds of innocent people have just been arrested in Pakistan, Iran, Malaysia, Indonesia and elsewhere for the "crime" of being young and in love... that's plain ridiculous.

Mehdi is an intelligent chap and I hope one day he learns to see through the lies of the Quran, just as he already can see the falsehood of the Christian Bible or the Tory Manifesto. The contradictions in publishing a blog like this are so obvious, so blatant, I hope that the moment of truth and real, anti-divine, revelation is almost upon him.
