Participatory Democracy: The Way Forward

An article on a new book on Democracy sparked some real discussion and debate

My piece on Paul Ginsborg's book Democracy sparked some great comments on the blog but also some suggestions for further reading.

Thanks to Michael MacPherson for recommending the Citizens' Initiative and Referendum and pointing out Michael Wills's parliamentary statement last month. He also refers to a dissenting voice in Red Pepper magazine.

Daniel Taghioff links to a good Wikipedia entry on Participatory Budgeting and an anonymous reader to a website set up specifically to discuss examples of the practice.

Meanwhile Roger Hampson, Chief Executive of Redbridge Council in London urges readers of the New Statesman to check out his authority's experiment.

I agree with you Martin about the comments especially by Tag, G man and KIA.

BUT

“Btw knave, has it ever crossed your mind that I might be right about participatory democracy *and* radical Islam?”

There are a number of logical fallacies with the above comment.

1. When have I disagreed with you on the danger of the radical Islamic right. lease show me ANY comment in which I have supported these individuals. What I might have said is that it was caused by the Reaganite right, who are now the neo cons and that the idea of deporting Muslims, from individuals like mate Martin Amis might be a tad extreme.

2. Also if I did disagree with you on the Islamic right, which I don’t, why is it contradictory to agree with you on one point but disagree with you on another.

3. The reason I don’t trust you is that you and Cohen are Cameron conservatives ( neo Thatcherites in a sheep’s clothing) economically and socially. The pretence of telling the world that you are a leftie, I find more than a little nauseating. The campaign against the radical Islamic right is just the excuse and justification to your trolls for your conversion to the right. A perfect example is that you hate for Brown and yet Gordan made the most pro Isreali speech ever made by a British PM. Not even mentioned by yourself or Cohen. You don’t like Gordon not because he is soft on the Islamic right but you think he is a statist leftie who should get in the neck because he upset the Tory monk Frank Field.

4. I am a social democrat who believes in mixed economy based on the Northern European model. It is probably wrong, certainly out of fashion and your economic free market liberalism has won the battle of ideas but I don’t give a jot.
