Why the editor of Closer should get her tits out

Laurence Pieau thinks that the topless shots of the Duchess of Cambridge are "full of joy" and "not degrading". I won't believe it until I see her nipples.

Laurence Pieau
Laurence Pieau, editor the French edition of Closer magazine.

I've only got three words for Laurence Pieau: get 'em out.

The editor of French Closer magazine, which published topless photos of the Duchess of Cambridge, has defended her decision by saying: "One shouldn't dramatise these pictures. The reactions are a little disproportionate."

She added that the couple were "visible from the street", omitting to mention ". . . if you have a telephoto lens the size of a cannon".

Warming to her theme, she continued: "She is a young woman who is topless, just like women who can be seen on beaches all over France and the rest of the world. They are pictures which are full of joy. They are not degrading."

Now, a more cynical sort than me might say that this is insufferable hypocrisy. I'd rather see some drooling bloke in a raincoat rubbing his thighs over the pictures than a professional woman pretending that, actually, they are, like, really empowering and a celebration of femininity, yeah?

If you think some blurry topless photos are "full of joy", Laurence Pieau, let me introduce you to the internet: it's ecstatic. There are so many breasts out there you could make looking at them at a full-time job. You'd have to retire at 67, nipple-blind but still not done.

These photos are not about a woman "like any other on the beach". And even if they were, that's still weird. Imagine if Closer announced that from now on, it was going to publish a photo of one random topless woman on its front page every week. Oh, the photos would be taken on a public beach - so legally the subjects would have less right to privacy than the Duchess. But they would have no idea that the photos had been taken until they strolled past their newsagent.

There would be pandemonium. I doubt they'd get a second issue out.

Perhaps then we'd realise that watching a naked woman from half a mile away without her knowledge is not any less creepy if you happen to have a camera in your hand.

The only reason that so many of us are so relaxed about invasions of privacy is that no one wants to invade ours.

Of course, there is one way that Laurence Pieau can prove she really thinks the reaction is over-dramatic. Go on, Laurence: hire yourself a photographer, a balcony and take off your bra. Let's see you in all your un-Photoshopped glory, "feeling the caress of the Provencal sun" or whatever the crappy soft-porn copy was that you commissioned.

Then, and only then, will I believe you when you say that there's no big deal about a topless woman. That publishing those photos was not a calculated, yet casual, humiliation of a woman to flog a few magazines. That you don't believe people would think less of you if they saw your breasts. That privacy is over-rated.

Put the microphone down, Laurence, and step away from your Twitter account. You don't need to give any more interviews: let your nipples do the talking.

Rather than following Mme Pieau around with a telephoto lens waiting to get a pic of her bare arse maybe someone should try to get sight of her tax returns and publicise them instead.

She should know these things, maybe she's slow. Hint: don't pick the nose, scratch yourself, burp in public or drop the kit. If that's too hard for her, maybe she should think about another job...

A mate of mine says he has only one thing to say on the matter.

"Phwoar!"

What I don't understand is why so many respondents are conflating the idea of the publication or otherwise of the pictures and their anti-royalism. I'm borderline apathetic on the subject of whether wer should have a royal family but this has nothing to do with whether one of them should be photographed topless by someone with a telephoto lense and have her breasts flashed all over the world against her will.

Note it's the "against her will" bit that is the real problem. People on beaches and elsewhere who may or may not attract the odd glance are in full knowledge of the fact that they're out in public, so they have some sort of control over the situation. This is all about someone else being in charge of Kate's body and using it for their own ends, and is a separate issue from whether or not she's a royalist parasite as some in here say (and have every right to believe). I'd have the same view if these were unwitting pictures of someone who stacks shelves somewhere; the one thing doesn't relate to the other, except in that nobody would bother with the pics of a non-celeb,

Breasts aren't in themselves degrading. It's having photographs taken of them when you thought you were in private, without permission, & then plastered all over some crappy magazine when they know you really don't want it. It's a form of harassment. Even if Laurence Pieau were to get her tits out for the mag, it would not be anything like the same. If (say) a rival mag took sneaky pics of her, yes, that would be something like equivalent.

If this the case then I demand full nudity images of the following:
* Tony blair
* Gordon brown
* Nick cleg
* David cameron
* david Miliband
* Jack Straw x 2
* Vice Cable
* william Hague
* ed Miliband
* MANDELSON

I have knowledge of the existence of these photographs, and will YOU, (Helen Lewis) provide these to your readers in a 300dpi downloadable format viewable on all machines, clearly this comes within the Job Description to provide the images to your readers, and I speak for many when I say this is something I would very much like to see.

parasites supported by the state. mostly by churchgoers who by nature are against topless. they (churchgoers) deserve the true about parasite family...

I think we should be proud to see that the Duchess has knocked such pseudo-celebs as Kim Kardashian, Lindsay Lohan and Cheryl Cole off the front pages.

depends on which pair of tits will sell. yes, it was obviously an invasion of privacy but she knew damn well that her only protection is the laws. It is easy to blame the one who took the picture or the editor of Closer. But if the picture is worth more than the possible fines + duration of imprisonment? Im not taking side but is it the way Capitalism works?

I'm sure the editor of Closer has her picture beside her monthly editorial. If it's no big thing and Closer celebrates breasts, then she should have no problems changing that picture of hers to one where she's topless - after all, it's something to celebrate! right? hmmm why do I think there's more chance of hell freezing over than that happening?

Good piece. It was nauseating to hear the editor cooing about a couple in love. Most couples in love would grab a robe sharpish if they thought someone was peeping tomming at them.

Double standards - there was no huge controversy when naked pictures of Prince Harry appeared, they were more a source of amusement than anything else.

Dick's picture

Yet another diversion; something to go on about that doesn't matter.

Pavlova's picture

Diversion from what? Things that matter to men?

Pavlova's picture

This type of thing is the scourge of women everywhere not just celebrities and royals.

Men routinely use camera phones to secretly and not so secretly take pictures of random women in the street and on public transport and on beaches. There is a whole porn genre for such photos taken without women's permission, up skirts, up bikinis, etc. I don't know if they still do it, but high street softporn mags used to pay men for submissions.

This is about more than privacy, though it definitely is about that, but it's also about a form of sexual abuse, men thinking they have a right over women's bodies with or without their consent. And it's no surprise that the lame old excuses of "what does she expect?", "it's her own fault" are being wheeled out to defend it.

ARL's picture

Well I would agree with all of this with the exception about the men bit. Er isnt the editor of closer a woman!

Pavlova's picture

You can bet the photographer wasn't a woman, nor the agency head, nor the person this editor reports to. I don't think these photographs would exist if it wasn't for the climate created by the overwhelmingly male paparazzi and tabloid editors and readership. But yes, there are some odd women about who aid and abet sexual harassers, abusers and rapists and I put this odious woman and her readership in that camp.

'I'd rather see some drooling bloke in a raincoat rubbing his thighs over the pictures'
really? well! this is the last time I read anything by Helen Lewis! what a pervert..

ps how about wendi murdoch on page 3, and roop in a raincoat rubbing his thighs on page 4?

Helen, i understand the point you`re making, "Practice what you preach", but after Brad and Angelina, these two over privileged parasites, are the so called most sort after couple on the planet!!, so when the royalists future Queen takes her kit off in the open, surely, they both know the score regarding putting themselves in such a stupid situation!, all of their own making!.
The sanctimonious tosh coming from all the Hysterical Sycophants, is laughable!, Mrs Windsor should ask her publicity obsessed sister about using the media when it suits them!!, i can`t understand all these Royal bottom lickers wetting themselves over a pair of spoilt parasites!!.
Perhaps i`m being naive, but surely, the bodyguards and their servants were there?, so she must be very confident about getting her kit off in front of people?, because she must`ve been exposing herself to them?, just a thought!.

Rachel Walker's picture

Another thought. Why would Kate take the top off in the sun? Perhaps for the same reason most other women do. Tan lines. And why would something like this matter to Kate? Perhaps because the likes of the Daily Mail devote miles of column inches picking holes in what they regard as imperfections in female celebrities.

Pavlova's picture

In other words, she was asking for it.

myouz's picture

The fact that Kate and Wills thought they could both be semi nude or nude in France the home of the Paprazzi shows their arrogance and stupidity. All of their own making is this Acup storm in a teacup.

She is not Joe Blogs she has married into royalty and she should have behaved accordingly. This semi outrage from William smacks of crocodile tears. They both want all of the privileges, but none of the responsibilties.

myouz's picture

WHat a sad state of affairs when even the NS are penning articles to defend Kate. I for one am sick and tired of hearing about this pompous feudal Germanic familiy. WHat has happened to the Left in the UK. Very sad indeed. What happened to the cutting edge journalism for which the NS was renowned. Gone down the toilet!!!

myouz's picture

WHat an absolutley ridiculous article. What on earth has happened to Helen. Has she lost the plot. Possibly mindful of the need to retain her Sky news reveiws spots, she too jumps on the bandwagon of poor Kate. The truth is that Kate lacks class and shows how she thought her imaginary super stardom status is real rather than imaginary. What Tanya Gold said in the Guardian is spot on:

Any sensible debate about the royal family and its corruption, which is rampant, despite claims of modernisation – their income has risen in this recession, thanks to George Osborne's intervention, and they are as profligate as ever – does not need a topless duchess on a sunlounger. She deserves criticism for her perfect interpretation of a surrendered wife, a wilting companion to William's barely disguised rage, and also for her obvious materialism. But this is too naked a punishment.

Kate is no victim and we the taxpayer pay millions of pounds to keep up this charade of the specialness and necessity of the royals. I note that state schools monitoring UK school pupils in the toilet area barely raised a whisper of dissent.

The royal family are parasites and if they really care about UK PLC they need to scale down and pay their own way. William is easily worth about 50 million.

If William does not want to live in a goldfish bowl, then renounce his rights to the throne and live as the rest of us do. LOL

New Platesman's picture

Angry about 'humiliating a woman to flog a few magazines', because, er, the NS has never done that. *cough* Naomi Wolf *cough*

Oh no please Helen Lewis, I think this is a bad idea, she looks sour enough with her clothes on!

A realist's picture

If we take this away from any morality aspect, does the editor of french closer feel this is going to help the brand in any way? Or indeed the editor of the italian mag, soon to publish photos? Perhaps the market in france and Italy is huge for such photos and the cover price of the mag will make them a fortune. Otherwise, how can a womens mag not see how ridiculously bad for advertising this will be? Will any brand aimed at mums, fashionistas etc want to be tainted with any advertising related to the companies that run these mags? What an own goal. I admit to looking at websites and mags at times for fashion etc. I may look at the adverts inside or on associated websites. But now these porn mags are putting me off my favourite coffee brand, face creams and perfumes! It may work for lads that read the sun, but think these mag editors have forgotten their readership. Also, people will find the pics on the internet and save money by not buying the mag. Love to be a fly on the wall at the next advertising meeting at the various companies associated with these mags when they find all reputable brands have pulled out.

Ridiculous. We hadn't heard of Laurence Pieau until now. Kate Windsor, on the other hand, is a paid entertainer, and one we pay generously to amuse us.

Pavlova's picture

Yeah so let's stick a hidden camera in her toilet.

since you're on benefits this claim does not apply to you Herbert.

Ivor Bigun's picture

Since you are on drugs irrelevant Jackass!

myouz's picture

Woah. That is not like you to defend royalty. The truth is that the royals are parasites, benefit scroungers who have made multi millions of the back of the taxpayers. Note too the OI reguests on the financial income of the royals. WHat have they got to hide. Shocking really when the poor are bing asked to cut back, the royals are getting more dosh!!

Herbert's picture

Have we been introduced Jackass?

hugh markey's picture

The Duchess of Windsor would not have been so foolhardy. Envy dressed up as admiration; fashion and precious gems these are the things that differentiate the Royals from the common herd.
