Today’s Daily Mirror reports that Lord Mandelson is being lined up for a career in television should his Machiavellian tactics fail to deliver a fourth term for Labour. The paper has obtained private documents suggesting he could be drafted in as a replacement for Diane Abbott or Michael Portillo on This Week.
After his strident attacks on the Murdoch empire in recent weeks, I’m sure he’d be very welcome at the BBC. It’s certainly a more plausible suggestion than the tiresome rumour that Mandelson will be parachuted into a safe Labour seat as a prelude to a leadership bid.
At times he’s Labour’s only impressive media performer and I’m surprised he has yet to grace Question Time with his presence.
For now, Mandelson is no doubt hastily planning a counterstrike against the Spectator’s Charles Moore, who revealed today that the Business Secretary recently met Colonel Gaddafi’s son at a country-house shooting party. We can expect Moore to be sleeping with the fishes by Monday.
