The EU is pushing to be recognised by the United Nations as a quasi-state, like the Vatican and Palestine, reports the Times.
Such a move is likely to dismay Eurosceptics, who view the award of observer status at the UN as another step on the road to statehood.
The proposal could also throw into doubt Britain’s and France’s permanent seats on the UN Security Council.
I have long regarded Britain’s membership of the Security Council as an indefensible anachronism, so anything that undermines it is welcome by me.
It’s absurd that India, the world’s largest democracy, and Japan, the world’s second-largest economy, still lack permanent seats on the council. Let’s hope the stalled talks on reform are restarted soon.
