The Smiths vs The Tories
Johnny Marr promises to reform the band if the government goes...
By New Statesman Published 01 March 2012 18:18
At the NME awards last night, Johnny Marr was asked if The Smiths might ever re-unite. His response?
We won't be reforming this week. Maybe if the government stepped down. If this government stepped down, I'll reform the band. How's that? That's a fair trade, isn't it? I think the country would be better off, don't you? I'll do it if the coalition steps down.
It's not the first time Marr has made his feelings plain to David Cameron. Their powerful fan likes to boast of his knowledge of The Smiths, causing Marr to tweet in 2010:
David Cameron, stop saying that you like The Smiths, no you don't. I forbid you to like it.

Who are the smiths?
Johnny's just cheesed off Cameron hasn't removed the 50% tax band.
love the smiths hate the tories
Champagne socialism ftw.
David Cameron is a t*sser, Ed Milliband is a mug and Nick Clegg is irrelevant.
I have some Smiths albums I like to sing along to ....."And if a double-decker bus crashes into us. To die by your side is such a heavenly way to die."
Even as a solo artist Morrissey can write lyrics that seem to resonate for me ... "I’ve been dreaming of time when the English are sick to death of Labour and Tories, and spit upon the name Oliver Cromwell."
Its great that he still has it in him to wind the f*ckers up...

The Falkland Islands situation is quite clearly one of complexity.
You are quite right to state the point of the Falkland Islanders right to self-determination as it is an undisputed fact that they wish to remain under Britain’s protection.
The problems arise in regards to the fact that they appeared on the islands due to Britain’s colonial past and thus have a desire to remain within the UK’s territory.
Unlike other former or current UK dominions however, there are no native peoples of the islands but Argentina has always believed they fall under their territorial remit and that they where taken during the days of Empire now thankfully long gone, at least in name if not finance.
The fact that Argentinean immigration to the islands as well as any open dialogue between the two countries has ceased to exist since the Falklands War on the issue opens up successive UK governments to criticism. Argentina is a flourishing democracy at present and has a right to inquire about the future of the islands and possible immigration to it in the future. This does not mean the islands are theirs to gain or Britain’s to lose, an argument constantly put forward by the British press to stoke up memories of a war triggered by a military junta during South America’s neo-liberal induced dark days.
Britain’s sending of military vessels to the area only stokes the fires in both houses when it is not required. As an advanced democracy surely Britain should show itself as such.
Britain’s record with islands and events like these is also worth mentioning. The terrible fate of the people’s of Diego Garcia shows that when pushed Britain is far from a believer in self-determination in lands it holds. Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran in 1953, and the Philippines et al also highlight that any form of consistency is clearly lacking in foreign policy on these issues.
That doesn’t mean the UK shouldn’t believe in self-determination now and in the future but an open debate between the two countries involved and an acceptance, which is currently absent, of Britain’s horrific imperial past is necessary to dertermine the fate of the islands.
In the words of one of Britain’s favourite sons “jaw-jaw is better than war-war.”
@test
too much oil in the region to give the falklands up. we cant do that. rather send the cheapest mercenaries in the world, ie british troops, to do the dirty work of the private interests that hold so much sway over our politicians. paid for by the taxpayer, used and abused by corporate interests. as if we need the falklands
So you can't be a socialist and have money. What nonsense you speak!
Jill - Not unless you're willing to pay 75% tax.
I'll take The Smiths over these dispicable conservatives any day!
Billy Webster - You don't care about the Falkland Islanders' fundamental human right of self-determination?
Argentina has no practically no historical link to the Falklands and they act as though they're victim's of colonialism rather than beneficiaries.
It's quite clearly hypocritical of left-wingers to claim that the Falklands belong to Argentina.
I hope Britain does all it can to ensure the right of Falkland Island's to self-determination and ignores apologists of Argentinian aggression.
Smiths were shit in the 80's and they are still shite now. Fuck of Marr you overrated twat
panic on the streets of london
panic on the streets of birmingham
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the principles of socialism. Shame then that those claim to be socialists always fall down by having the same faults as those people they claim to despise.
Nick Clegg's favourite Smiths songs:
'Heaven knows I'm miserable now'
'The boy with the thorn in his side'
'Last night I dreampt that somebody loved me'.
@simon g
