Toyota on Thursday announced a safety recall of about 1.3m Corollas sold in the US and Canada over faulty engine control modules that could lead to computer glitches and stopping in traffic.

The recall of the Corolla and Corolla Matrix models sold from 2005-2008 follows three unconfirmed accidents, one resulting in a minor injury, said the Japanese auto company. No accidents have been reported in Canada where only 200,300 cars have been recalled.

Toyota assured customers that it would replace the engine control modules on the affected cars as part of the recall for free.

Starting from mid-September, the company will mail interim notifications to owners informing them of the recall. Future notices will be sent out as and when parts become available to undertake repairs.

The latest round marks the fifteenth time that Toyota has issued recalls for its vehicles around the globe. In July, Toyota recalled 700,000 cars worldwide due to steering and engine problems. Earlier this year, it undertook a recall of over 8.5m cars after cases of jammed accelerator pedals.
