Kia Motors sales up 23.4% in May

The greatest increase in sales was in China, where the company saw a 28.9%

Kia Motors global sales for passenger cars (export sales, domestic sales and sales from overseas plants), recreational vehicles (RVs) and commercial vehicles increased by 23.4% to 175,098 units in May 2010, compared to same period a year ago.

In May 2010, sales in general markets increased 59.3% to 37,318 units, sales in China increased by 28.9% to 26,101 units, sales in North America rose by 19.5% to 37,162 units, Europe sales were up by 18.7% to 34,503 units, and Korea sales increased by 5% to 40,014 units.

The company has posted the C-segment Cerato sales of 32,498 units for May 2010. The B-segment Rio and Sportage compact SUV follow with 18,894 and 15,914 units sold, respectively. The Sorento mid-size CUV sales were 14,265 units and the sales of Soul urban crossover vehicle were 11,908 units for May 2010.

In terms of vehicle category sold overseas, the company's recreational vehicles and passenger cars have increased 39.3% (50,406 units) and 23.1% (80,118 units), respectively for May 2010.

Hyoung-Keun Lee, president of Kia Motors, said: "As we approach the mid-year mark, sales of Kia vehicles globally are well ahead of our targets and we expect this momentum to continue throughout 2010, as completely redesigned and reengineered versions of our popular volume sellers, Sportage and Optima, are soon to be launched across all global markets."
