Quality-conscious Toyota is struggling to salvage its reputation amid growing safety concerns over malfunctioning gas pedals that could stick and accelerate the vehicle without warning, jeopardizing passengers' lives.
The sales suspension follows a recall of 2.3m of Toyota vehicles last week in the US, the company's biggest market. That recall was on top of an earlier recall of 4.2m Toyota vehicles.
A spokesman for the Japanese carmaker said he was aware of past issues on some European vehicles of Toyota, but did not yet know whether the recall would extend to Europe too.
Maria Mack, an official in Toyota's Brussels headquarters said the matter was still under investigation regarding Europe.
The vehicles affected by the sales suspension include the Corolla, the RAV4, the Tundra pick-up truck, and some models of the Camry, US's top-selling sedan.
