1 Does art make a difference?

Of course. We couldn’t live without art. It is all around us, from the design of cutlery or fine cars to music. We constantly reshape the way we live, and that in itself is a creative task.

2 Should politics and art mix?

I have chosen not to mix the two. If I did, it would be important to impress upon my fellow politicians how important this intangible, wonderful expression is. It is a deep experience that encourages better relationships between people and in the community in general.

3 Is your work for the many or for the few?

I can't dictate how many or how few choose to come and hear my music. It's important to me that those who do choose to come are inspired to express even more love in their lives.

4 If you were world leader, what would be your first law?

I think it would be that we should all seek to honour ourselves and those around us, to really understand the significance of the individual.

5 Who would be your top advisers?

They would be people who have the courage to be truthful with themselves.

6 What, if anything, would you censor?

I think it is almost arrogant to attempt to censor art, as it implies superiority on the part of the censor. I honour the significance of the individual, so I am very wary of censorship.

7 If you had to banish one public figure, who would it be?

The person who is not able to stand in front of his people and be honest.

8 What are the rules that you live by?

I have the courage to be truthful with myself. I respect the views of others, even if they are different from mine. I try to be as fulfilled in my work and my life as I can.

9 Do you love your country?

Oh yes, I love my country as I love myself, with all its flaws and all its wonderfulness. I belong to two countries – I was born and grew up in Jamaica and I live in England now. So both these countries are my country. I have been nurtured in many ways by both.

10 Are we all doomed?

I don’t think so – unless we are doomed to the quest for survival.
