Definitely. First of all, the power of suggestion should never be underestimated. Second, art in many ways is similar to the concept of “magic”, meaning changing the world through the power of one’s will. The mainstream media control the most powerful reality-wizardry of the modern age, but artists can hone their little crafts/magics and do battle in a million little or not-so-little ways with the giant wizards.

2 Should politics and art mix?

Politics and art can’t help but mix. If art is simply a balm of escapism, then the political repercussions of that art serve to mollify and blind people. This is not to say that in its highest forms art should be proselytising or annoying. Don’t like homophobic lyrics? Go write something more intelligent and enlightened – but at the end of the day it comes down to whichever is the more awesome song.

3 Is your work for the many or for the few?

For the few. I can keep my operations self-sustaining as long as the overheads are low, and I prefer an understanding, dedicated few to a “flavour of the week” many. An understanding, dedicated many is rare.

4 If you were world leader, what would be your first law?

Abolish world leaders.

5 Who would be your top advisers?

Pete Seeger, Bobby Seale, Ian MacKaye, Professor Louie, Kimya Dawson, hordes of heroic schoolteachers, etc.

6 What, if anything, would you censor?

Nothing.

7 If you had to banish one public figure, who would it be?

Arnold Schwarzenegger – send him back to Eighties sci-fi, that’s best.

8 What are the rules that you live by?

“First rule is: The laws of Germany. Second rule is: Be nice to Mommy. Third rule is: Don’t talk to commies. Fourth rule is: Eat kosher salamis.” (Not really, it’s a Ramones song.)

9 Do you love your country?

Does “my” country include the parts stolen from Mexico? Those are pretty nice.

10 Are we all doomed?

Worldwide average life expectancy is about 67 years. Enjoy it while it lasts!
