1 Does art make a difference?
I don’t know if art makes a difference to the world, but it has kept me alive. When I first went into the prison art class, I focused and felt strong. Now life is good. I’m getting new friends and studying to be a sound engineer. I wouldn’t have made it without the painting.
2 Should politics and art mix?
Art is like the truth. Politics is like lies. How could they mix? Art gives mixed messages: it doesn’t say the things politicians want to say.
3 Is your work for the many or for the few?
I painted Lady Butterfly just for my girlfriend, but now that it’s going to the ICA, I want it to have an impact on other people.
4 If you were world leader, what would be your first law?
When two people have a child, they should have to stick together and look after that child until they die. That is the family I never had.
5 Who would be your top advisers?
Richard Branson, because he knows how to make money, and how to give it away. Tiger Woods, because he has vision and is so positive. The wrestler Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson for when I need somebody firm but fair. My mum would take care of the family policies.
6 What, if anything, would you censor?
I want to censor racism, but I know it’s better to let the BNP say what they want – that will show up how ignorant they are.
7 If you had to banish one public figure, who would it be?
George Bush. I’d banish him to Guantanamo Bay so he can feel what it’s like in there.
8 What are the rules that you live by?
My grandma taught me that there are two big secrets to life: patience and dedication.
9 Do you love your country?
Yes and no. I hate the way Britain is getting like a gold rush, everyone chasing money.
But I love the place for being fair. In a way, I’m glad I’ve been in prison. Most of my friends on the outside haven’t moved on, but I have.
10 Are we all doomed?
I guess global warming may get us all. Eighty per cent of people think, “Fuck it!” and do what they like – they’re definitely doomed – but somehow I reckon the other 20 will be OK.
