Head of Strategic Operations Unit

Unite, Britain’s biggest union with 1.42 million members in every type of workplace, is seeking a dynamic, pro-active and creative communications strategist to manage and drive a communications programme that will help address the challenges facing ordinary working people. A national and global leader in the trade union movement, Unite is fighting for employees in the workplace, taking trade unionism out to millions of unorganised workers, advancing the political interests of ordinary working people and standing up for equality for all.  

 

The Head of the Strategic Operations Unit would work in partnership with the union’s executive leadership to manage rapid response communications.  The Strategist will also be responsible for developing and driving a comprehensive communications programme in national media, online and through paid advertising.

Candidates should be quick writers, creative thinkers, capable and skilled multi-taskers, with demonstrated experience utilising a range of communications tools to help advance campaigns.

This is a 12-month fixed term appointment. 

 

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Manage and execute a regular rapid response program, including drafting statements, press releases and other materials;
  • Provide overall strategy and planning for comprehensive communications programme, including drafting strategic documents informed by executive leadership;
  • Drive and execute communications plans with a team of research and communications staff;
  • Draft and update messaging documents informed by media analysis and polling research;
  • Manage key media relationships and manage pitching of national and regional media;
  • Perform other duties as required to support the union and its mission.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Minimum of 10 years of strategic communications and media relations experience, particularly in large organisations;
  • Experience as a project manager with five + years of staff management experience;
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing the goals of ordinary working people; trade union experience a plus;
  • Impeccable writer with proven ability to adjust to feedback in fast-paced environment;
  • Deep knowledge for national media and demonstrated relationships with reporters at top-tier outlets;
  • Strong research abilities and news and political savvy;
  • Ability to work independently, handle multiple priority projects and meet deadlines;
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness and flexibility in approach to project assignments and planning
  • Familiarity with new media tools and openness to expanding skills in this area.

Press Officer

The Press Officer would work within the Strategic Operations Unit and lead a rapid response programme that will help advance the goals of ordinary working people.  The Press Secretary will also be responsible for driving a comprehensive communications programme in national media, online and through paid advertising.

Candidates should be quick writers, creative thinkers, capable and skilled multi-taskers, with demonstrated experience utilising a range of communications tools to help advance campaigns.

This is a 12-month fixed term appointment.

Social Media Coordinator

The Social Media Coordinator would work within the union’s strategic operations unit and will monitor, manage and implement a comprehensive online engagement strategy that will engage ordinary working people and Unite allies.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Social Media Coordinator will be responsible for moving and amplifying messages online, while working to engage working people, allies and supporters through this medium.The Social Media Coordinator will:

  • Build and amplify campaign messages online;
  • Engage allies and supporters through social networks;
  • Build and maintain a list of surrogates, allies and supporters to engage in defending the union and priority campaigns;
  • Act as a liaison with allies to disseminate messages and materials to partner networks and channels;
  • Manage and update campaign websites;
  • Oversee planning and implementation of digital editorial calendar;
  • Conduct audits of online work and analysing results and metrics.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Minimum of with 5 years of relevant experience in social media and online engagement;
  • A passion for the internet and online communications;
  • Proven ability to conceive, implement, and manage cutting-edge online strategy, including mobilisation campaigns;
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing the goals of ordinary working people; trade union experience a plus;
  • Strong writer with proven ability to adjust to feedback in fast-paced environment;
  • Strong research abilities and news and political savvy;
  • Ability to work independently, handle multiple priority projects and meet deadlines;
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness and flexibility in approach to project assignments and planning;
  • A knack for identifying compelling content, some experience with web video production is a plus;
  • Expertise with online analytics;
  • Demonstrated ability to understand complex public policy and translate it into compelling digital content;
  • Familiarity and comfort with interdisciplinary work, where digital engagement is integrated with earned and traditional paid media.
