Show Hide image 18 July 2012 Chart of the day: Movers and shakers According to a paper in the Lancet, the UK has the third most slothful population in Europe, beaten only by Malta and Serbia. But globally, we are nowhere near the laziest. Just 28.1 per cent of Maltese people do 600 metabolic equivalent minutes of exercise a week: equivalent to walking for 150 minutes, or running for an hour. Compare that to Bangladesh, where all but 4.7 per cent of the population do the same. According to the Guardian, in 2008, inactivity was responsible for about 5.3 million of the 57 million deaths worldwide. By Alex Hern Alex Hern is a technology reporter for the Guardian.
