The meaning of the F-word: Being funny

Sophie Elmhirst, New Statesman assistant editor

I'll be honest. I don't know if I'd launch a campaign on this issue and it's sure as hell not as important as most of the other things on this list but I am sick to every single one of my teeth of people (blokes) saying things like, "Women? Not funny, mate." I mean, it's a bit like saying, "Women? All left-handed, mate."

Female comics are tired of having to prove that they're funny. They just are. And sometimes they're not. A bit like male comics. Anyone who watches comedy beyond tuning in to Michael McIntyre while they pick their feet on a Saturday night knows that women can also be . . . wait for it . . . funny. Maybe I'll start a campaign against stupidity.
